Secondhand Serenade at HOB Anaheim 2/27/13

It takes a lot of nerve, and boatloads of talent to take a stage the size of House of Blues Anaheim with nothing more to hide behind than an acoustic guitar. No backing band, no dancers, no lasers, and all those things people would have you believe are necessary for a concert tour these days. Just a gorgeous voice, lovely songs, and a couple of fierce covers, that was all John Vesely (AKA Secondhand Serenade) needed to enrapture the crowd on Wednesday night.

Vesely has been working hard to build his OC following for years now (yes, we still have pictures from an early show at The Alley in Fullerton), efforts that obviously payed off with much of the crowd singing every word right back to him. Secondhand Serenade has always drawn comparisons to Chris Carraba's Dashboard Confessional, but never is the comparison more notable than in a live setting with the crowd involvement that both acts engender.

While the set seemed a bit short, that may easily be explained by the fact that it was so damn good you just didn't want it to end. John did a great job of hitting all the songs he is best known for, as well as promoting his newly released single, which was actually much better live than the full band recording would have suggested. He also performed a beautiful rendition of Coldplay's "Fix You", keeping fairly tight to the original arrangement and yet brilliantly making it his own, as well as a startlingly hilarious ode to Enrique Iglesias with a cover of "Hero" that had the entire crowd in hysterics.

Since this was only the second date of the tour, there are lots more chances to check out Secondhand Serenade, and John will be making another pass through with his full band later this year as well. Openers for this show included Artist Vs. Poet (fronted by Joe Kirkland who was absolutely robbed by being voted off of The Voice so early) and Alex Goot, who was once, many moons ago, just another kid posting his songs up on Myspace (yep Alex, we remember you from back then), and is now a quite polished artist who pays a passing resemblance to a young Andrew McMahon, which is about the highest compliment you can get from our camp.

But in the meantime, brush up on your Secondhand Serenade lyrics, especially "Fall For You", and come out and support the remaining dates.

OLD MAN MARKLEY DEBUT “TRAIN OF THOUGHT” FROM NEW ALBUM ON CMT.COM

OLD MAN MARKLEY DEBUT “TRAIN OF THOUGHT” FROM NEW ALBUM ON CMT.COM

Los Angeles’ “Newgrass” Band To Release New Album, Down Side Up, On March 5th

February 27, 2013 – Los Angeles, CA – LA bluegrass punks Old Man Markley have premiered a new song, “Train of Thought,” from the band’s upcoming album, Down Side Up, today on CMTEdge.com!  Down Side Up is due out on March 5th via Fat Wreck Chords and can be pre-ordered now at http://www.fatwreck.com/record/detail/792.

Stream Old Man Markley’s new track “Train of Thought” now, exclusively at CMTEdge.com: http://bit.ly/WrZc2O

From the track’s opening fiddle to its washtub-thumping rhythm, “Train of Thought” is a barn-burning track that showcases the band’s incredible musicianship and is practically made for listening while sippin’ some moonshine, stompin’ boots at your local bonfire or even mixing it up in a punk-rock circle pit.

“"Train of Thought" is a cargo car of ideas let loose on the tracks,” bassist/vocalist Joey Garibaldi tells CMT.com.  “The fiddle lines soar like scenery viewed through a train window, the guitar drives the song forward, and the music flies full-speed ahead, just like life...it reminds us, above the beautiful rush of sound, to remember to slow down and look around. Smell a rose. Watch a train go by. Take the scenic route.”

The sentiments of a “beautiful rush of sound” are felt throughout Old Man Markley’s sophomore full-length.  The album features thirteen tracks that blur the gap between bluegrass, country and punk rock like the recently released single“Blood on My Hands” and “Rehearsal.”

Old Man Markley are currently on tour with Dropkick Murphys with additional spring/summer dates coming soon.

OLD MAN MARKLEY PREMIERE NEW SONG, “REHEARSAL,” FROM UPCOMING ALBUM

OLD MAN MARKLEY PREMIERE NEW SONG, “REHEARSAL,” FROM UPCOMING ALBUM

LA "Newgrass" Band Hits The Road With Dropkick Murphys

February 20, 2013 – Los Angeles, CA – Boot stompin’ "newgrass" septet Old Man Markley has revealed a new song called “Rehearsal” from their forthcoming album, Down Side Up, today at AmericanSongwriter.com.  Down Side Up is the band’s sophomore album due out on March 5th via Fat Wreck Chords, which can be pre-ordered now athttp://www.fatwreck.com/record/detail/792.

Stream Old Man Markley’s new track “Rehearsal” now, exclusively at AmericanSongwriter.com:http://bit.ly/155HZSp

For their latest track “Rehearsal,” a heartfelt story of a hardworking immigrant, Old Man Markley mix things up with a little folk and Americana blended with their signature “newgrass” sound and the result is a stellar toe-tapping experience.

“"Rehearsal" tells the tale of an immigrant who came to the U.S. at the turn of the last century and eventually found work at a funeral home,” Katie Weed (fiddle, vocals) tells AmericanSongwriter.com.  “He worked as a musician at night also, and his band would drive to shows in his hearse since it was the only vehicle that could accommodate all the members and their gear. His story really struck me: the dedication to his family and his music, in spite of the dangers and travails of working both day and night. Life is short--and he saw death on a daily basis--yet (or maybe because of that) he really seems to have filled his to the brim.”

Today’s debut of “Rehearsal” follows the recent release of the first new track, “Blood on My Hands,” from Down Side Up, which is available for free download at http://www.fatwreck.com/record/detail/792.

Old Man Markley are currently making their way to Cleveland where they’ll kick off a tour with Dropkick Murphys on February 21st.

AS THEY BURN "WHEN EVERYTHING FALLS APART"

AS THEY BURN "WHEN EVERYTHING FALLS APART" off WILL, LOVE, LIFE due for release from Victory Records on Tuesday. You can order the disc HERE.

Recorded by new member and keyboardist Bastien Jacquesson at Studio Bleu in the suburbs of Paris, France and mixed by Jason Suecoff (ALL THAT REMAINS, TRIVIUM, AUGUST BURNS RED, MOTIONLESS IN WHITE). The double cover artwork was done by MESHUGGAH’s official photographer, Anthony Dubois and French painter Charlotte Mollet, who drew each of the eleven signs that represent the eleven tracks of the record; each symbol has a special meaning linked with the song's lyrics.

“An exhilarating head rush of skull-splitting force and speed that unites the tech death brilliance of Meshuggah with Obituary’s classic carnage.”  - Big Cheese

“Heavy and atmospheric. The band utilizes the resented breakdowns, but adds a very appealing atmosphere that makes this band stand out from the dark depths of hardcore.”  -Sputnik Music

Don’t miss AS THEY BURN on this year’s Bonecrusher Fest as they tour alongside JOB FOR A COWBOY, BENEATH THE MASSACRE and more, beginning March 1st canvassing Europe, Scandinavia and the UK.  See the full list of tour dates here. Pre-order Will, Love, Life at the Victory Records’ Webstore and download the single “Dream Collapse” through iTunes /AmazonMP3 and listen to the full song stream here.

THE PARLOTONES RELEASE SHAKE IT UP TODAY

Meyer PRPress Release
THE PARLOTONES RELEASE SHAKE IT UP TODAY

AXS TV AIRING "LIVE DESIGN" CONCERT THIS FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 15

Los Angeles, CA, February 12, 2013- Today marks the release of South African rock band The Parlotones EP, Shake It Up. This is the band's first release since recently relocating to Los Angeles in order to break into the US music scene. Giving up all of the comforts of home and moving to a new territory is all part of the drive and ambition that made The Parlotones South Africa's biggest rock band in the first place. This Friday, February 15, the band's "Live Design" concert from the sold out 20,000 capacity Coca Cola Dome will air on AXS TV at 1PM EST. The concert premiered last month on the channel with such impressive success that multiple re-airings have been lined up.

Already conquering multiple international markets, the band is quickly becoming recognizable throughout the world and began to make their mark in the US upon touring here over the last two years. The response and support they received from those visits were the catalyst for the big move and they've already been welcomed with open arms. Radio support for the first single, "Shake It Up" has kicked in before the song's official add date and the group were featured on the premiere episode of KROQ DJ, Stryker's new TV show, Lexus Night Out just this past weekend on CBS. In addition to the band's performance on the show, Stryker took them on a tour of their new city to experience all of the Los Angeles signature spots including a drive down the Sunset Strip, a walk around Hollywood & Highland for a chat with a Marilyn Monroe impersonator and of course, the group's first time eating In-N-Out Burger.

While living in the US, The Parlotones are not only giving up the comforts of their success, but giving up the comforts of home, literally. When they are not touring, they will be living in a house together and recording their full length album, due out later this year. The band plan to be touring throughout the spring, with a full tour to be announced shortly. They will also be attending SXSW this March where they have multiple performances lined up.

In their native South Africa, there truly is no rock band bigger than The Parlotones. On top of the headlining Coca Cola Dome show, the Johannesburg-bred quartet have performed at the World Cup Kickoff Concert to an audience of a billion in 2010, and were handpicked by Coldplay to open the British band's stadium shows in Johannesburg and Cape Town in 2011. Also last year, The Parlotones staged an original rock theater production, Dragonflies and Astronauts, which was broadcast live around the world in 3D via DIRECTV and in 2D on Facebook. (The 3D broadcast was so well received Stateside that the satellite provider scheduled 100 re-airings, while more than half of the worldwide viewership on Facebook hailed from the U.S.) Dragonflies and Astronauts wove a narrative through the band's catalog, including 16 songs that were Top 40 hits in South Africa.

In keeping with The Parlotones' big themes are big ideals. Ever since these four school friends formed the band in the Johannesburg suburb of Roodepoort in the late '90s they have always aspired not only to have fun making music, but also to give back to their community. Over the years, they have raised funds and awareness for a variety of social and environmental organizations, lending their high profile to initiatives such as Live Earth, Earth Hour, The South African Broadcasting Corporation's Carbon Free campaign, Nelson Mandela's 46664, and Live Earth's Run for Water, among others. They are also ambassadors for the anti-poaching organization Rhino Force, United Against Malaria, and several other non-profits that combat problems that acutely affect South Africa.

2. Only Human
3. Fight Back

Awhile ago, October of last year to be exact, Lee Diamond dropped me a note to introduce himself and his project Shock Radar. While I listened to it immediately, and loved the bluesy track "Live Like Lions", this has unfortunately ended up on the bottom of my to do pile for months now. So it is, with massive apologies to Mr. Diamond, that I want to introduce you all to Shock Radar and encourage you to head to the Shock Radar Store and pick up the limited edition vinyl 10 inch.

THE BOLTS, southern California’s modern rock-pop act, unveil their latest music video for “The Truth,” following the video for throwback single, “Walk Away,” a performance at the 2012 Sunset Strip Music Festival and massive success of their Fall 2012 EP.

Produced by Guy Eckstine, “The Truth” is one of the explosive tracks off the band’s upcoming full-length debut album, Wait 'Til We're Young, out February 12, 2013 via Bolts Broadcasting Co. The classic yet contemporary quintet comprised of bassist and vocalist, Addam Farmer; guitarist and vocalist Heath Farmer; keyboardist and vocalist, Austin Farmer; guitarist and vocalist, Ryan Kilpatrick; and drummer Matt Champagne, is influenced by artists like The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Queen, The Clash, The Killers, The Strokes, My Chemical Romance and Modest Mouse. Ice Nine Kills: The Predator EP

Musicians are inexorably drawn to covering Adele songs, and Boston's Ice Nine Kills are no different. Taking a rocked up turn at "Someone Like You", they quite ably made a very well known song their own. This is just the final track on the recently released The Predator EP, and while quite good, isn't even the best track. That honor would go to opening track "The Coffin Is Moving" followed closely by "What I Never Learned In Study Hall", an acoustic version of which appeared on Take Action Volume 11. Ice Nine Kills have seen a lot of changes over the years, but if this EP is any indication, they sound like they are in a really good place right now. Fresh off the Kickstarter campaign that made this EP possible, it seems INK are ready to tackle both a punishing touring schedule and plans to record a new full-length in April.

PK at The Wire in Upland on Friday Feb 8th

San Luis Obispo based PK are headed back to our area this coming Friday (2/8) to play The Wire, arguably one of the best small venues in So Cal. Located in old town Upland, just 35 miles outside LA, The Wire is a great small room where most show nights you are standing elbow to elbow with the various bands on the bill as they cheer one another on.

PK need to do little to attract a following other than play their extremely well executed video for their track "Some Nights". While it may be an unfortunate title, due to the large shadow cast by the fun. song of the same name, this video goes a long way in presenting not only what this band is, but what they can be. While the unique vocals of frontman Travis Hawley are certainly a draw for this band, their true strength is in the combined contributions of the band as a whole. It's time to recognize the efforts of this hard traveling young band and start pushing them up to the next level.

Like PK, openers for this show That Art Thou, scream unrecognized potential, so all you label folks looking for the next big thing might want to drive out and take a look.

The Swedish synth-pop duo Niki & the Dove takes “The First” off of Brooklyn quartet Body Language’s upcoming album and puts it through a dreamy remix machine: layers of soft pads create an icy mood in which whispery vocals are pitched and glitched. The crooning sample of “girl, you think you’re made of stone / but you’re made of glass” adds extra tenderness to this exquisite remix.
The magic behind this Body Language / Niki & the Dove collab goes way deeper than just a remix: the two synth-pop bands first crossed paths in Austin during SXSW, where they shared a bill. They all instantly clicked and insisted on keeping in touch. Later in the year, when Niki & The Dove came to New York for a show, Ian (the drummer from Body Language) joined the duo to play percussion in their live set. The bromance continued to grow thereafter, and appreciation for each others’ music naturally led to them to remix each other. Then? “Then everyone lived happily ever after,” says Grant of Body Language. And after hearing the fruit of their remix labors, one has no choice but to agree.
Body Language is giving this remix away for free as an exciting first-taste of what they’ve got in store for us this year. The original version of “The First” will be featured on Body Language’s second full-length album, Grammar, slated for release in Summer 2013 on Lavish Habits.
