Best Albums of 2012

Every year I am surprised by how predictable the Best Albums of 2012 lists have become. Just because things sell a lot of units does not necessarily make them best. At Blind Carrot Magazine we have once again compiled our list of the albums that grabbed us by the throat and shook us until we had to agree that they, in their own unique and individual ways, made the biggest contributions to our musical year.

BRIGHT BLACK HEAVEN by Blaqk Audio
 SOME NIGHTS by fun.
 BLUNDERBUSS by Jack White
 HANDWRITTEN by The Gaslight Anthem
 NIGHT VISIONS by Imagine Dragons
ON THE IMPOSSIBLE PAST by The Menzingers
 BATTLE BORN by The Killers
 THE LUMINEERS by The Lumineers
DRINK. SING. LIVE. LOVE. by Versus The World
WALK THE MOON by Walk The Moon

The honorable mentions that nearly made the list:
PICTURE SHOW by Neon Trees
MY HEAD IS AN ANIMAL by Of Monsters and Men
THE LATENESS OF THE HOUR by Alex Clare

Last Call Release Free Holiday Song

Last Call Release Free Holiday Song

Band’s Debut Full-Length ‘Dog Years’ Out Now Via Broken Arrow Collective

Record Release Show Jan 5th at the Knight Hall in Las Vegas
W/ Special Guests Caravels, Heart to Heart, Stickup Kid, The Letter You, Alaska and Dreamcatchers

“If you think casinos the size of a small town and gallon-sized mixed drink holders are the only impressive things to come out of Las Vegas, then you haven't heard Last Call's solid punk rock sounds. The foursome have officially dropped their new album, Dog Years, via their own Broken Arrow Collective imprint, and it's reminding us of all the reasons why we love the genre.”- Purevolume

Las Vegas, NV punk rock band Last Call have posted a FREE holiday song titled “The Duke’s Real Name Was Marion Morrison” at:

A Message from Last Call:

“We originally wrote ‘Duke’ for Punks In Vegas' 2011 holiday compilation. We decided that we wanted to release it proper this year, and we recorded it in my basement and sent the tracks to our good buddy Paul Miner to mix and master. After a very long year, we'd like to thank everyone who's supported us and our new record. It's been a great way to close out the year and bring in the new.
Happy Holidays from Last Call.”

Last Call’s long-awaited new LP Dog Years is also out now via their own imprint Broken Arrow Collective. A hometown record release show is confirmed for Jan. 5th at the Knight Hall in Vegas. Offering support will be Caravels, Heart to Heart, Stickup Kid,  The Letter You, Alaska and Dreamcatchers.

Dog Years was produced, engineered, mixed & mastered by Paul Miner (New Found Glory, Fireworks, Thrice, Death By Stereo) at Buzzbomb Sound Labs in Orange, CA between March and November 2012.

Last Call has spent the last year a bit quieter than usual. With the release of "Stay On The Outside" in summer 2011, the band spent the remainder of the year touring the country in its support. Building a steady buzz and momentum, the band eagerly began recording their debut full length with friend & producer Paul Miner in March 2012. Shortly after beginning the record, the band split from Mightier Than Sword Records, throwing an unexpected wrench into the entire process, and prolonging the record's release.

Dog Years marks the first official release from the Broken Arrow Collective, an organization of sorts including members of Last Call and friends who aim is to promote equality and spread awareness by way of music. Dog Years will also be available on cassette from the band’s friends at Immunity Tape Co.

Drummer Adam Blasco explains, "This record is about everything that we've been dealing with over the last couple of years, both individually and as a band. We've always written songs for ourselves, but this record is the one that we want to reach as many people as possible. It's definitely the most emotionally involved record that we've put out, and we're singing about things that have never found a way out of us until now. It's an amazing feeling. If one person finds a message in these songs that touches them emotionally, we've accomplished our goals. The Broken Arrow Collective is something that has been on my mind for about the last year or so. This record means a fucking lot to me and the rest of these dudes involved, so this is the perfect time to make this idea a real tangible thing. We're very proud of everything we've created, and couldn't be more psyched to finally share it with everyone."

Early 2013 will bring a nationwide tour as well as a UK/European release of the LP via City Of Gold Records.

Upcoming Show:
Jan 05          The Knight Hall               Las Vegas, NV    (record release show!)

THE BRONX TO RELEASE FIRST ALBUM IN FIVE YEARS ON FEBRUARY 5

THE BRONX TO RELEASE FIRST ALBUM IN FIVE YEARS ON FEBRUARY 5

New Single "Ribcage," Available Now On 7" Vinyl And Download

December 17, 2012 – Los Angeles, CA – Acclaimed Los Angeles punk rock band The Bronx will release their long awaited fourth album, The Bronx (IV), on February 5, 2013 via White Drugs/ATO Records.  In anticipation the band has released a new song, “Ribcage,” which is streaming now at http://soundcloud.com/thebronxxx/the-bronx-ribcage and available for download on iTunes and Amazon as well as on limited edition 7” vinyl, along with a previously unreleased b-side “Into The Black,” at http://thebronxxx.shop.musictoday.com.

For the better part of a decade, The Bronx have played provocateurs. From their beginnings as an attack-mode hardcore band to their hardscrabble lives as road warriors to the twist of fate that led to their alter ego Mariachi El Bronx — an episode that itself was an act of defiance — the Los Angeles quintet has embraced a fierce independence.  As they prepare for the February 2013 release of their fourth rock album, one thing's for certain: The Bronx have grown up, but they haven't gone soft.

"This represents the highest evolution of the band, which is exactly how it should be be," vocalist Matt Caughthran says of the album fans inevitably will come to know as The Bronx (IV). "We're the same guys, but we would never make the same record twice. And because of everything that's happened with El Bronx, we've grown as musicians. And that's why on this record you'll hear that the songs are driving everything."

The Bronx burst on the scene in 2002 with music that recalled the heyday of L.A. punk — artillery-fire guitars and percussion punctuating anguished missives about the perils of street life and the frayed edges of society.  Now the band (Caughthran, guitarists Joby J. Ford and Ken Horne, bassist Brad Magers and drummer Jorma Vik) frames its aggression in different and, yes, more sophisticated ways.

"We made an effort to trim the fat and focus the ideas a lot more," Ford explains. "It helped that we're working in our own studio, with our friend (producer/engineer) Beau Burchell, and that we know what we want to do and how to get there very quickly."

The Bronx (IV) also reflects a certain musicality that the band acknowledges is a carryover from its work over two albums as a mariachi outfit. Mariachi El Bronx started as an act of rebellion in 2006 when the punk band took offense to being asked to do an acoustic performance and showed up in sombreros with a mariachi arrangement of the song "Dirty Leaves. Now El Bronx has taken on a life of its own, with its reverent, enthusiastic take on the genre winning fans worldwide.

"I think that after doing the mariachi records, it gave us a whole new outlook and a more structured way of writing music. We figured out what works best," Vik says. "Everything is less spazzy. Matt doesn't scream as much, but he's got that thing in his voice where he can scream in pitch — mariachi has helped his confidence as a singer and ours as songwriters."

Indeed, Caughthran admits, "I found that a lot of melodies crept in subliminally and I didn't even realize it until later." "Will both bands eventually encapsulate each other and become this horrible mariachi rock monster?" Ford says, laughing. "I wonder."

Produced by Beau Burchell, The Bronx (IV) shows no overt sign of that. It does, however, seethe with band's characteristic rage, even if that rebellion is not quite as youthful as it once was.  The single "Youth Wasted" is Caughthran's fearless look back "at a lot of the bad decisions I made," he says. "I'd like to think that as a human being I have the best intentions and I'm a good person. Sometimes it doesn't always work out that way."

Call it another chapter of Bronx lore. For a band that survived two near-death experiences involving their tour van in their first 18 months, that weathered label problems that undermined albums No. 2 and 3 and that even made it through a mid-career summer on the Warped Tour, it's all part of destiny that only occasionally feels in the Bronx's hands.

"We made this record on our terms," Ford says. "We don't have to rent a studio for a zillion dollars or pay some mega-producer to help us, because we've become self-reliant. It's been a long road and we're proud of it."

Road warriors as they are, The Bronx recently wrapped up a headline tour of the UK and Europe, and will head back out for select dates in the U.S., to be announced soon, before returning to the UK in February in support of the new album The Bronx (IV).

Christmas Time Is Here with Leftover Cuties’ New Holiday EP

Join Los-Angeles band Leftover Cuties as they get into the holiday spirit with their brand-new EP, Christmas Time Is Here. This fun collection features Leftover Cuties' spin on their hand-picked favorite holiday classics and is a perfect gift for everyone on your list. The EP begins with a signature cover of “Santa Baby”, with a coy vocal by the one and only Shirli McAllen. The up-tempo revamp of the Christmas classic “Winter Wonderland” is a wild ride through snow-covered hills. “Christmas Time Is Here" will have you snuggling by the fire with your favorite someone. "Blue Christmas" is peppered with mariachi horns and timbalis, and nods to the band celebrating the holidays at home in Los Angeles.

Christmas Time Is Here is an appropriate end-of-year celebration for Leftover Cuties, who have enjoyed their best year to date. Even if you don’t know their name yet, you’ve almost certainly heard them in your own living room. Their original song "Game Called Life" has been the theme song for Showtime’s highly-acclaimed series "The Big C" for three seasons running. Another original Leftover Cuties song, “Smile Big,” was featured in a Samsung Galaxy SIII ad that aired around the clock during the London Summer Olympics. And most recently, Hyundai tapped their version of "When You’re Smiling " for a currently running worldwide campaign. No matter what the season or what continent you happen to live on,
Leftover Cuties are right there to play for you.

Paste Magazine raves, “The Leftover Cuties have added a breath of fresh air to L.A.’s music scene.” Influential Los Angeles radio station KCRW lauds the band’s “sultry crooning, tender melodies, and bittersweet lyrics,” and Examiner.com praises, “In a world where style is too often held in higher regard than talent, Leftover Cuties are the real deal.”

Leftover Cuties is currently in the studio working on their forthcoming album with producer/engineer Dave Way (Fiona Apple, Macy Gray, SherylCrow) which is set to be released in Spring 2013.

Release New EP
"Archives & Rarities"

Stream EP on AOL's Spinner, here:  http://aol.it/fhJJqj
Check out PK's video interview with FUSE, here:  http://on.fuse.tv/125RX5J

"Imagine the Killers, the Gaslight Anthem and Motion City Soundtrack had a
baby... That baby would be PK." - FUSE

"MRP2 blushes up 'Some Nights' with a spacey remix that illuminates frontman Travis Hawley's vocal similarities The Cure's Robert Smith." - Baeble Music

San Luis Obispo, CA - December 12, 2012 - High-energy, scrappy indie-pop quintet, PK, has released a new EP, "Archives & Rarities," featuring remixed, live and acoustic versions of fan-favorite tracks. Purchase the EP on iTunes here:  http://bit.ly/USc4kZ. PK was just chosen by MTV Buzzworthy as one of 2012's most "criminally overlooked artists." Check it out here:  http://on.mtv.com/XAc23E

PK recently premiered a new music video for their new song "Chase The Sky" today on FUSE. The live performance video, filmed at a sold out show at PK's hometown venue in San Luis Obispo, CA, captures the band's raw, energetic live set as lead singer, Hawley, flings himself into the crowd without missing a beat. Watch the video here, http://on.fuse.tv/T6jVeq

Hailing from San Luis Obispo, California, PK is made up of Travis Hawley (Vocals), Matt DePauw (Guitar), Mikel Van Kranenburg (Bass), Nick Fotinakes (Guitar) and Rico Rodriguez (Drums).  While the members initially met in high school, vocalist Hawley was born in the United Arab Emirates and lived in England for five years before moving to the U.S.  His brief stint in the UK deeply affected his vocal style and he has often been compared with emotive British artists such as Robert Smith, Bono, and Danny Elfman.
PK has been making waves in the industry since their 2010 debut release, Into The Roaring, scored the San Luis Obispo New Times' Album of The Year award, a feature in Rolling Stone, and on the stage opening for bands such as Aerosmith, Youngblood Hawke, Shiny Toy Guns, Twin Atlantic and Angels and Airwaves. PK continued to impress with their sophomore project, The Lost Boy Sessions (recorded at the famed Red Bull Studio in Los Angeles),  released in May 2012, receiving accolades from the likes of The Huffington Post, RCRDLBL, Baeble Music and MTV. The band is currently recording their 3rd LP in Nashville with producer Jason Lehning (Mat Kearney). The release is expected in early 2013.

About Allstar Weekend:

This is the story of Allstar Weekend, formerly known as Allstar, and formerly-formerly known (or not-so-known) as Outerspace Politicians.

The story goes something like this...

Zach and Cameron met in Middle School in the San Diego suburb of Poway , California . Zach taught Cameron how to not be socially awkward, although recently, those roles seemed to have reversed. In High School, Zach started a band and put some jamz up on Myspace. That's how long ago it was...Myspace. The demos included the song "Dance Forever," which was recorded in their bedroom. The songs caught the attention of brother and sister team / owners of the independent, influential, trend-setting, and world-renowned label Drive-Thru Records, Stefanie Reines & Richard Reines (the former of the two who is obviously writing this bio). Stefanie and Richard were best known for their incredible ability to recognize and cultivate young, raw talent, and immediately saw it in "Outerspace Politicians."

Zach convinced Cam to learn to play bass, and their friend Michael Martinez emailed the band asking if they needed a drummer...they did! Michael happened to attend their rival High School and beat Zach in an "Air Band" competition, which remains a sore subject to this day. Anyway, the band now complete, the two teams joined forces - band and management - and set out to change the world and/or have some fun and make music.

First order of business: get rid of that atrocious band name. Name changed to Allstar.
Second order of business: not get sued by the NBA. "Weekend" added to band name. Still a legal issue, but soon sorted out and able to co-exist in peace & harmony.

The band was signed a year later to Hollywood Records. Singles, videos, photo shoots, ep, album, extended ep, Youtube videos, good stuff, bad stuff, fun stuff, not so fun stuff, cool people, not so cool people, ups, downs, highs, lows...whew! The outcome: an amazing fanbase who we love & cherish, some lifelong friends, and an album that we are still very proud of (All The Way) with the exception of a certain song (hint: it includes an ellipsis in the title).

To walk in the valley of the shadow of Mickey (ie Burbank, CA)...No matter how appealing it seemed, ASW never fully fit the Disney "mold." There were no TV shows, no movies, no promise rings, no smoke and mirrors. Just real dudes making real music wanting to do real tours and make real youtube videos without having to do some real censoring! They loved the H'wood years, and for the record, the band all LOVE Disney, but it was time for them to move on. And so they asked to be let out of their deal. No joke. They were not dropped. Hollywood was kind enough to recognize the band's vision was different from theirs, and it was time to move along.

Welcome to present day A-Dub. "The songs we're writing now we are more proud of than anything we've ever written" says Zach. This August we launched a Kickstarter and reached our funding goal in 24 hours!  With the support of our fans, we are able to begin recording our third full-length record Dec 10 in Nashville with Producer Jason Lehning (Mat Kearney, Steve Forbert).

A handful of these new songs will be debuted on our Headlining Tour, which starts in Anaheim , CA at the House of Blues on January 19, 2013. Joining us on tour is Cute Is What We Aim For and YouTube star Tiffany Alvord.

BEFORE YOU EXIT
Announce The Resolution Tour 2013
With Action Item and New Music!

Jan. 25th | The Roxy | W. Hollywood, CA

Jan. 26th | Chain Reaction | Anaheim, CA

Band To Release New EP February 2013!

The pop/rock trio, know as Before You Exit, have announced that they will be joining Action Item's 'The Resolution Tour' kicking off on January 4th, 2013. These young pop-rockers combine catchy hooks, charm, with the great musicianship to make an adorable group you will be seeing everywhere in 2013! They will be performing at The Roxy on January 25th and at Chain Reaction on January 26th. See full tour dates below and watch the bands' video announcement here: http://bit.ly/SSLuEE.To purchase tickets, please visit: BeforeYouExit.com/tour.

The Orlando-based band began a few years ago with brothers Connor McDonough, 19, (Vocals/Guitar) and Riley McDonough, 17, (Vocals), only recently did the band bring in younger brother Toby McDonough, 14, on vocals. The trio gigs live augmented by Thomas Silvers (Drums) and Braiden Wood (Guitar). Unlike many bands of brothers, Oasis and The Black Crowes come to mind, the trio work harmoniously. "We actually get along really well. We all have our thing and work in categories by preference," Connor says. "I write vocal melodies, Riley writes lyrics, and Toby helps with both. There are never fights because each of us can do our own thing, but also contribute to each other."

Set to release their brand new EP in February 2013, the three brothers have crafted a soaring pop rock album of uplifting relationship songs that effortlessly blend sharp hooks with bright and buoyant rock. The album standout and first single, "I Like That", is a tune with tenderly romantic lyrics and big pop-rock beat. Ryan Daly and Anthony Improgo, along with Connor McDonough, produced the new album. "They really listened to what we wanted to do and let us try out our ideas, no matter how crazy," Connor says laughing. "Because of that, we feel really connected to the way the recording turned out," Riley adds.

Before You Exit released their debut EP, Letting Go, in March 2011, which has been critically acclaimed by the likes of MTV, J-14, Seventeen, Just Jared, just to name a few. After the release, the band has been gaining great buzz from touring in support of Allstar Weekend and All Time Low.

Conjuring up the optimism in the band's name-inspired by the sentiment "make a difference before you exit"- the band works daily to make their way to the top but they never fail to stop and appreciate what has got them thus far. "There's no way we'd be anywhere without our incredible fans. They are behind us every step of the way and are a huge piece of this band," states youngest brother, Toby. In light of the many short lived and fly by night artists, this young, singer/songwriting, brother driven band, is one to be around for a while.
