Canines & Cocktails: Pet Adoption at Johnny's

Today's post is not technically music related, but since Johnny's was a primary sponsor of The Hootenany (and the coolest bar in the OC), we will make an exception. Today between 2:00pm and 8:00pm Johnny's is hosting a pet adoption event. Many of the adoptees are posted on their Facebook Event Page. They are also having raffles and giveaways. Please check out the Johnny's Facebook Page for more details. The adoption fee is $250, but you get $200 in gift certificates to Johnny's, which makes your new best friend super inexpensive, and they have already been microchipped , spayed/neutered, and have their shots. If you've been thinking of adopting a pet, today is the day!

Chuck Ragan Compiles Tour Stories In THE ROAD MOST TRAVELED

Chuck Ragan Compiles Tour Stories In

With Contributions from Flogging Molly, Frank Turner,
Social Distortion, Samiam, Gaslight Anthem and More...

“This book is dedicated to those who have, and continue to live a life on the road, and to our loved ones who’ve dealt with our absence which is result of this way of life and work,” begins The Road Most Traveled, an inspiring assemblage of stories, tales and anecdotes about life on the road and how to survive it. Told by The Camaraderie Collective which consists of members of assorted punk and indie rock bands such as Flogging Molly, Samiam, Social Distortion, Frank Turner, Joe Gittlemen, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Dropkick Murphy's Al Barr, William Elliot Whitmore, managers, bus drivers, crews, label personnel, and other folks who lived and worked just as long on the road behind the curtains and the lights. These stories were compiled by consummate road warrior, CHUCK RAGAN who himself logs over two thirds of each year on tour with his long-running band HOT WATER MUSIC, his Americana/folk solo career, and his traveling folk multi-artist ensemble THE REVIVAL TOUR. “I chose the road at an early age,” he writes in the foreward. “Although I found amazing places, stories, and people, I’ve lost just as many. I’ll say, looking back on the course of it all, I wouldn’t change a thing.”

Collecting road stories and cautionary tales from Berlin to Boston, Hollywood to Helsinki, each chapter offers a unique perspective on travel and how to survive it. Each chapter has its own voice and its own pearls of wisdom, from Greg Anntonito of The Bouncing Souls espousing the importance of sleep and water (“if you are touring for up to nine months a year, you have to develop endurance and a healthy lifestyle. Especially if you are a lead singer”) while internationally-published journalist Jonah Bayer finds sage advice in Bill and Ted (“the most valuable lesson that I’ve learned is simply to ‘be excellent to each other’”). Yo-yo demonstrator Steve Brown urges the need to explore (“No matter how tired you are, how broke you are, how little you feel loved or appreciated . . . go check out that county fair”) while Gaslight Anthem’s Brian Fallon advocates not taking this touring life for granted (“I realized one day I’m going to be too old, or too tired, or just called to something else, so I need to enjoy this now. Live today. Watch everything, absorb everything, breathe it in”). Narratives such as these and many more from Rise Against’s Tim McIlrath, Chunksaah Records president Kate Hiltz, At The Drive-In’s Jim Ward, and many more offer snapshots into a world than many have never witnessed while, at the same time, providing much-needed advice to those actually living that lifestyle.

The Road Most Traveled is a rollercoaster of a book, from "humorous anecdotes to near- death experiences and everything in between. Summing up the spirit and essence of the book, Chuck Ragan concludes, “Every one of these lives has a story, and every one of those stories has an origin and a reason. And every now and again, someone may be willing to share their story of the joy and tragedy of the road most traveled.”

The Road Most Traveled is available now in hardcover and eBook (146 pages; retail $16.95) at, Barnes & Noble, iBooks, Millner Crest, and, as well as at some of your favorite bands’ merch tables.

Two Beats, One Tour

September 27, 2012
English Beat and The Paul Collins Beat
Hit The Road Together!

It’s an age old story: two bands, one name… and an age old struggle: Which band changes their name? In this case, it’s the story of two Beats… A ska/reggae/pop band from England and a power-pop band from the US. The solution is also the essence of why both became legends: Both bands kept the BEAT!

This Fall, ENGLISH BEAT will hit the road alongside THE PAUL COLLINS BEAT. “It’s the essence of power pop, which is wider than continents,” says Dave Wakeling, mastermind behind English Beat about the recently announced tour. “Short, sharp, catchy, exciting and memorable!” It’s the first time ever, and all thanks to a Facebook friendship,” says Wakeling. “Paul and I originally met back in '83 and have been in touch occasionally over the years, but recently we've been in closer FB contact, which led to this idea becoming a reality....Two beats, hearting as one!” The tour kicks off on October 11th in Asheville, NC and wraps up on October 27th in Minneapolis, MN (tour dates below).

Hot on the heels of the recently released career-encompassing boxset The Complete Beat, a single disc greatest hits Keep The Beat: The Very Best of The English Beat, and a live double CD/DVD package, Live At The Us Festival, ’82 & ’83, English Beat's irresistible blend of ska, reggae, and punk has made them undeniable stars throughout the last three decades. As a testament of their ongoing longevity and impact on modern music, their songs have been heard recently in Hot Tub Time Machine ("Save It for Later"), Shrek Forever After ("Click Click"), television shows (TBS's Glory Daze), and even in Target commercials ("Tenderness" as their post-English Beat break up band, General Public). Among the other uber-memorable hits include “Mirror In The Bathroom”, “I Confess”, "Doors of Your Heart", and "Tears of a Clown" among many others.

Paul Collins formed his version of "The Beat" in 1979, a high energy, skinny-tied rock group in the style of The Ramones, Blondie and The Dictators. With a handful of heavily-revered albums (The Beat, The Kids Are All The Same), The Paul Collins Beat continued making melodic, powerpop hits till the tail end of the 90s. Collins launched a critically-lauded solo career, and after a ten year hiatus, The Paul Collins Beat resurfaced in 2004, releasing a string of new records, that combine their classic sound with the raw energy of his solo works.

West Palm Beach four-piece Surfer Blood released their breakout debut Astro Coast in 2010.  The album and its songs landed atop numerous Best Of Lists, including Rolling Stone, Pitchfork and Filter, with Bob Boilen from NPR declaring “…dig into Astro Coast and you'll hear why, song for song, this may be my favorite album of 2010.”  They have toured extensively in the US and abroad, sharing the stage with the Pixies, …Trail of Dead, Death Cab For Cutie and more. Surfer Blood are currently working on their new album with producer Gil Norton – it is set for an early 2013 release.

Hindu Pirates is a Huntington Beach-based band of five dudes, who are fusing garage rock and blues...definitely in the same vein as Fidlar, Allah-Las,The Soft Pack. All the members are 18-21 with the youngest of the bunch Giuseppe LoBasso who is fresh out of high school. They have all been friends since high school (that was only about 3 years ago for most of them), which is when they launched the band. The guys recently opened for Delta Spirit and Tijuana Panthers at The Observatory and have also performed with Allah-Las, The Growlers, Har Mar Superstar, JJMAZ, Gantez Warrior and many other local standouts at big venues in OC and LA - The Smell, House of Blues, La Cave, The Satellite, Avalon, Detroit Bar, Constellation Room, Continental Room, etc., as well as festivals like Desert Daze and Eclectic Roots.

“Hurley is a company based on inclusion,” says chairman and founder Bob Hurley.  This philosophy applied to Bob Hurley’s early years as a Huntington Beach shaper, working with friends alongside the world’s best athletes to make a better surfboard. It applied to the company’s launch in 1999, when Hurley decided to start a brand that was a true microphone for youth. In 2002, Hurley was acquired by Nike — the largest and most influential sporting brand in the world. Inclusion remains a guiding principle of the company today, where innovative products like Phantom Boardshorts and game-changing events like the US Open of Surfing continue to redefine what is possible in our world. Hurley headquarters are in Costa Mesa, CA with international offices in Sydney, Tokyo, Barcelona and Bali.

YOUNG TURKS’ new album, Where I Lie, is out now on Animal Style Records.  To purchase:
Like their namesake that led a successful revolt of the oppressive Ottoman Empire monarchy more than a century back, Portland, Oregon’s YOUNG TURKS have revolt in mind. Intent on breaking up the monotony of a generation of hardcore bands who have slipped into a mediocre paint-by-numbers routine of distorted guitars and Cookie Monster vocals, the YOUNG TURKS are here to make things right again for the record buying public.
Armed with influences calling to mind everyone from KID DYNAMITE to AMERICAN NIGHTMARE and a brand spanking new debut full length (Where I Lie), this five-piece from the Beaver State is ready to rock your world.

The Clarion Call is made just seconds into the record when Matt Koenig utters the phrase: “And if I promise just one thing for the rest of my life…” before counting off, then the gates are flung open and hell is unleashed for the next 30 or so minutes, a constant barrage of sound, fury and pointed lyrics that doesn’t let up over a dozen tracks. The group is fronted by ex-BROADWAY CALLS bassist Matt Koenig, now on vocals; former HELL AND REASON guitarist Jason Soejoto; Mason Juve on drums; Gareth Welker on bass and Bryan Zurek on guitar.

Formed in the winter of 2010, the band gave a few hints of what was to come with their first 7" Halfhearted (Arctic Circle Pit Records). They road tested the songs and band to add a few scars before heading to D-Wreckords Studio in Portland to capture their latest work on wax, calling on Stu McKillop (DAGGERMOUTH, LIVING WITH LIONS, CARPENTER) to mix and master.

The result, Where I Lie, is their proper introduction to the rest of the world, more than fulfilling the promise from that 7” complete with the twin assault of blistering guitars, drums that would have the gods of thunder cowering in fear and vocals that will stick with you for days.
Strap in folks - the revolution has begun!

The Kin to Play The Roxy on 11/8

We came to know about NYC based The Kin in a most unusual way. A couple of years ago, these boys came across one of our reporters at JFK, trying to wrestle her large bag and offered her a hand, proving that at least among good looking Australian transplants, chivalry actually isn't dead. Turns out these boys also happen to be quite good musicians, and you will be getting a chance to get to know them for yourselves when they play The Roxy on November 8th. Tickets are only $10 and can be purchased HERE.

If you would like a taste of how awesome they are, here's a link to a lovely live video of The Kin performing "Abraham"

Frank Turner: 21st Century Troubadour

You may be able to point to One Direction or Nicki Minaj for all that is wrong with the music industry today, but you can shine a big spotlight on Frank Turner for all that is right. Last night at HOB Anaheim, Frank Turner and The Sleeping Souls showed that real musicians playing heartfelt music is far more powerful than all the bells, whistles and marketing gimmicks that abound in the industry today.

Frank Turner is the exemplification of the 21st Century troubadour. A true road dog, who commands his audience as easily alone with his guitar, as with his full band, Frank Turner proves that talent can prevail in today's world of manufactured pop tarts. The enthusiastic crowd sang his lyrics back to him almost as boisterously as a Dashboard Confessional crowd, and danced with as much reckless abandon as the small room would allow. Weaving together a wonderful mix of the best of last years England Keep My Bones, with both new tunes and older ones, the set list did a great job of appealing to everyone.

By the time he closed out the set with his signature song, "I Still Believe" and returned to the stage for the encore set which set off with a cover of the Tom Petty classic "American Girl" the entire crowd was drunk, sweaty, and more than satisfied with their evening.

Go Radio: "Close The Distance"

In the time since Jason Lancaster left Mayday Parade and formed Go Radio, it has sometimes felt as if he has been searching to find himself, with occasional flashes of brilliance (like Goodnight Moon, Any Other Heart). With the release this week of CLOSE THE DISTANCE, it is abundantly clear that he has found what he was looking for. In the company of his Go Radio bandmates, it is clear that he is now demanding the radio play that has only been limited up to now. CLOSE THE DISTANCE is filled with brilliant, hook-laden pop-rock, instant classics, that could have easily been sold to any of our eras current pop-tarts, but are made all the more awesome by being anchored by Jason's uniquely distinctive vocal style.

It seems that Go Radio are finally ready to close the distance between being indie darlings, and grabbing for the mainstream spotlight. Full of passion, and intelligent, almost literary lyrics CLOSE THE DISTANCE, seems destined to be Go Radio's breakthrough moment.

Frank Turner and The Sleeping Souls: Thursday at HOB Anaheim

Well, since we already know you all will be coming out on Wednesday to HOB Anaheim to support Lit, it is best that we advise you to make it a double-header and come back on Thursday for Frank Turner and The Sleeping Souls. After all, the man was personally asked by Danny Boyle to play the opening ceremony of the  Olympics, and not long ago played Wembley that gives you a bit of a clue that he is an artist well worth your time and money to catch at a small club like the House of Blues. This tour is in support of Frank Turners' upcoming release from Epitaph records entitled Last Minutes and Lost Evenings (to be released 10/2 in the US). It is a collection of 15 songs designed to introduce Frank to the American audience, along with a DVD of his Wembley show. While this is certainly a must purchase, we cannot stress enough that you must also own England Keep My Bones, which was released last year, and made our Top 10 of 2011.

Immovable Objects To Play The Wire in Upland

For Immediate Release
September 17th, 2012
“It was a long time coming,” says Matt Gagin, the man behind Immovable Objects, when asked about his recent move to Perth, Australia. “I was just ready to leave and some of the things that were and are happening in the U.S. were weighing on me and I think I needed a break. My wife wanted to be near her family who live in Sydney and Perth. It wasn’t a really hard decision but it took a little time for the Australian government to decide to let me reside in their country.” While waiting for the green light for migration Gagin and Immovable Objects created their most recent recording, “I’ll Know to Believe in Sparrows”, where the band explores the nuance of the album as a complete piece and the ideas of instrumental music as an emotive and visual experience. For his first return to the U.S. Gagin plans to perform the latest Immovable Objects’ record in its entirety with a video accompaniment. “I feel like the music expresses itself with or without a projected narrative but I think without lyrics or a true front man to engage the audience, and believe me I‘m no front man, their can be a lack of connection for some people. Others, however, enjoy it more because there is no voice.”
Immovable Objects started out as the performance and recording name for San Diego-based multi-instrumentalist Matt Gagin. After spending five years with Waterline Drift, Gagin says he “…wanted to do something where I played a lot of different instruments and creativity wasn’t stifled by preconception or personality conflicts.” His first record, “Hoping It Stays Just This Broken” incorporated elements of indie rock, shoegaze and electronica into dense soundscapes. “I had no intention of really making a record, I was just going to record when I felt like it and see what was coming out. If I liked it, cool, if not, then I didn’t. I was really just making music for the sake of making music.”
For the follow-up record, Gagin decided to put together a live band that could play relentless instrumental rock, then capture that energy and emotion on tape. Enlisting the efforts of Paul Balmer (guitar), Brad Botbyl (guitar), Ted Donovon (drums) and fellow Waterline Drift alumnus Tim Peacock (bass), the quintet’s sound has been compared to God Speed You Black Emperor, Explosions in the Sky, Mum, Sigur Ros, Panda Bear and Her Space Holiday.
“Our show in Upland will be a lot of fun because it is the only all ages show on the tour. We try as hard as we can to do all ages shows but the venues are becoming harder and harder to find. I really respect the people at The Wire in Upland, where we are playing, for having the passion and desire to bring music to everyone. Sure you’ll get the few that complain that they can’t have a drink while watching the show. I ask, are you there to drink or to listen to a band?”
After recording through the early months of 2012 at Black Box Studios with Mario Quintero, the new album, “I’ll Know to Believe in Sparrows”, was released in June 2012 on Hawnyawk Records and is currently in the process for Australian distribution. Says Gagin, “I’ve read on record label websites that you should include your successes in your bio. The only true success we have is recording music that we like and not compromising it. So, if nothing else we have that.”
Immovable Objects return to the U.S. October 22nd through 27th for a brief southwest tour. They play October 27th at The Wire, 247 North 2nd ave. Upland, CA 921786 with Catachresis.

About the tour, Hawley says, "We're excited to be hitting the road with our good friends, From Indian Lakes. We went out earlier this year with Twin Atlantic (Red Bull Records), played some shows with Angels and Airways, and then did a bit of touring by ourselves. It's always nice to share the road with another band and it'll be exciting to watch our combined fanbases grow from from the Pacific Northwest into the South West on tour."
