Versus The World/Unwritten Law at HOB: 11/24/12

Thanks to unfortunate circumstance, I was only able to catch the end of Versus The World's set on Saturday night, but that was certainly enough to leave me wanting more. The band produced one of the best cd's of the year, Drink.Sing.Live.Love and from the part of the set I was able to catch, they seem to be one of the years' most appealing live bands as well. There is something to be said for punk rock bands comprised of musicians with a lot of experience under their belts. When all of the pieces fall together just right you get a band like Versus The World, that feels like everyone involved knows they have hit on something very special this time around.

Unwritten Law's set took longer than expected to erupt into moshing and fighting, only turning to seriously rough an hour into the set. Mickey Avalon took the stage for guest vocals on one number much to the delight of the seriously inebriated crowd, just before the fighting got really ugly and I gave up and left after an elbow to the ribs from a security guard trying to violently subdue a drunk guy.

Namesake/Eve 6/Everclear: 11/21/12

An opportunity to open up for well-established artists is always a good thing. The only problem is when you face a crowd that is so far out of your target audience that the best you can hope for is polite indifference. That was the unfortunate situation faced by Namesake on Wednesday night as they opened for Eve 6 and Everclear at The Grove of Anaheim. If the set Namesake delivered had been in front of a Warped Tour crowd, the screaming would have most certainly been deafening. As it was, as hard as these boys worked, they received little more than a polite response from the crowd that was primarily older, and primarily there to see Everclear. Despite that actuality, Will Crafton and his bandmates tore through a very tight set, that cannot be described as anything less than impressive.

Once Eve 6 hit the stage, the sadly smallish crowd did warm up a bit. The band executed a carefully curated set that hit the perfect balance of old and new material. They may have a few more years on them, but they are still masters of the pop-tinged rock that made them famous.

Headliner Art Alexakis, the only original member of Everclear, was suffering a bit of a sore throat this evening, but it seemed to make little difference to the extremely enthusiastic crowd who shouted the lyrics to even the lesser known tunes he played, with heartfelt enthusiasm. Bassist Freddy Herrera did an impressive job of carrying the responsibility of driving the enthusiasm and power of the set in the face of Art feeling like a bit of a "cranky grandpa" to use his words.

The evenings festivities were kicked off  by a series of local bands of note including My Pretty Little War, Lost In Gravity, and Good Morning Orbit all of whom seemed beyond thrilled to have been included on this bill. While all three showed promise in their respective styles, Good Morning Orbit delivered a standout performance that suggests big things to come for this band.

                            GOOD MORNING ORBIT

Her Bright Skies: "Rivals" Album Review

Hide your girlfriends/sisters/daughters! One of the best looking bands to come around in awhile, Her Bright Skies, are releasing their brand new album, RIVALS, digitally on November 19 via Panic & Action Records, and unlike the cheesy (yet attractive) boy bands that have become popular of late, Her Bright Skies are actually pretty good.

While Her Bright Skies have been establishing quite a following across Europe for the last few years, they are a relatively unknown entity in America. With catchy, yet muscular songs that bring to mind bands like The Used and Taking Back Sunday tied up with some old-school influences like Motley Crue, along with their poster-boy looks, Her Bright Skies are well-poised to take America by storm.

The lead single "Lovekills" is available on iTunes now, and is arguably the best tune of the bunch, but you are going to want the whole album. While Her Bright Skies don't reinvent the wheel with this release, what they do, is present a cohesive album of sub-genre defying rock songs, without any of the gimmicks so prevalent today. This is the sort of band that stands primed to influence a whole generation of kids to pick up and instrument and chase their musical dreams because they make it look like a damn good time.

For more information: The band is also confirmed for the 2013 Take Action Tour where they will perform alongside The Used, We Came As Romans and Mindflow.

Starting in 2010, the 7 piece band set out with a  goal to separate themselves in a genre often cluttered with copy-cat bands. They combined their love for the hardcore genre with infectious, loud, and powerful choruses of generations before their own, and ultimately created a fresh new approach to heavier music. Combined with an equal drive to connect with every last one of their fans, they hope to use whatever notoriety they receive to spread a simple message of belief in yourself, and hope in others. Their debut EP "Limitless" self-released in November of 2011 furthered this idea of zero boundaries on what you're capable of, and has even spawned the name for their fans: "The Limitless". Through touring and a fantastic web presence, the band has built an incredible foundation of fans that eagerly await their first commercially released record and first full length.

Armed with an incredible record (“The Fallout”) produced by Joey Sturgis (Of Mice & Men, The Devil Wears Prada, Attack Attack!), an intense touring schedule, and an unrivaled work ethic, Crown The Empire hopes to take over the music scene in 2012 and beyond, and eventually become one of the major players in rock and roll. Never forgetting that they too are "Limitless", Crown The Empire is a force that shows no signs of stopping.

Crown The Empire is:
Andy Leo: Vocals
Brandon Hoover: Guitar
Bennett Vogelman: Guitar
Hayden Tree: Bass
Austin Duncan: Keys

"Pairing up Bullet for My Valentine singer and guitarist Matt Tuck on the six-string assault and Cancer Bats vocalist Liam Cormier on chief vocal duty, Vultures not only exceeds the high expectations, it raises the bar for the genre. "  5/5 - Artist Direct
It takes just one listen to AxeWound’s "Post Apocalyptic Party", the ferocious track they released as a free introductory download back in May, to make their intentions abundantly clear. Which is to say, they are a metal band… proudly, defiantly and unbendingly so.
Their pedigree is inarguably first class – since they feature guitarist/vocalist Matt Tuck from Bullet For My Valentine and singer Liam Cormier of Canadian hardcore bruisers Cancer Bats, prime movers both in two of the most exciting bands to have emerged onto the metal scene in recent years.
The line-up is completed by drummer extraordinaire Jason Bowld (Pitchshifter), guitarist Mike Kingswood (Glamour Of The Kill) and ex-Rise To Remain bassist Joe Copcutt. Not surprisingly, they have already been branded a ‘supergroup’ in the press.
AxeWound see themselves in more precise terms. This, they say, is an outlet for them to make music that is more extreme than they can and do in their regular bands. Their inspirations for doing so hark back to a golden generation of metal acts – to such heavyweight names as Pantera and Slipknot.
“Those were the bands that I adored growing up,” says Matt Tuck. “They each had that ‘don’t give a fuck’ attitude. AxeWound is about us taking the same opportunity to do exactly what we want. Musically, lyrically, it is what it is – no boundaries or limits.”
The roots of AxeWound go back to 2010, when Jason Bowld filled in for Bullet For My Valentine drummer Michael ‘Moose’ Thomas on a brace of shows. He and Tuck kept in touch and last year began discussing working together on a project separate from the hugely successful Welsh metallers. They eventually got together in December 2011 to write the songs that make up AxeWound’s debut album, Vultures.
Cormier was the obvious choice to front and pen lyrics for these songs. He and Tuck had been friends for years, Cancer Bats having supported Bullet For My Valentine on numerous tours.
“There was no one else I even had in mind,” says Tuck. “Liam’s voice alone is just so vicious.”
The Vultures album was recorded in Cardiff at the start of this year, regular Bullet For My Valentine collaborator Martin ‘Ginge’ Ford engineering the sessions. From the outset, the aim was to work quickly and instinctively. In the event, they recorded 11 songs in 11 frenetic days.
“It was very intense, very demanding but that’s how we wanted it to be,” reasons Tuck. “No pre-writing, no rehearsing… just booking a studio and going in and doing a song a day. We wanted to capture something that happened right there and then.”
Says Cormier: “The record is great because it’s been made by a bunch of friends who are just enjoying themselves playing together and doing something that’s different to what they normally do.”
By any measure Vultures is a terrific debut. It is, as was intended, a thoroughly uncompromising beast: standout songs Burn Alive and the title track being driven by venomous riffs, the former in particular echoing the sort of thrilling assault administered by the likes of Slayer and Sepultura in their pomp. Yet Tuck’s melodic gifts are in ready supply too on hulking tunes like ExoChrist and the epic Collide.
“Doing what I do in Bullet, I know what people want in every sense from a band like this,” he says. “Whether they are fans of hardcore metal or of classic melodic metal. We’ve tried to encompass all of that into one brutal, nasty machine.”
There is as well a sense of weight and substance to AxeWound. Tracks like Victim Of The System, Blood Money And Lies and Church Of Nothing reflect on the state of things right now.
“Liam’s a very switched on guy,” considers Tuck. “He knows what’s going on in the world. Some of the things he’s written about here, you’re not hearing from any other metal band these days.”
Says Cormier: “I love that there’s a political side to what we’re doing. It’s not specific but it is saying that the world is fucked. That attitude completely fits with the music.”
Interest in AxeWound has been rabid enough for them to be featured on the cover of Kerrang! magazine and will intensify through a spate of live and festival dates this summer. The release of Vultures at the end of July will assuredly bring it to fever pitch.
Of course, with Matt Tuck also currently finishing up the writing of Bullet For My Valentine’s next record, it remains to be seen if AxeWound is to be repeated. But for now – and as the band would have it – it is what it is: a glorious one-off.
“This is what comes out when I’m given free rein,” concludes Tuck. “It was the right time to let my hair down… and let Satan compel me

November 9, 2012 - Celebrating its eleventh year of raising funds and awareness to non-profit organizations, Sub City (Hopeless Records' 501c3 non-profit organization, which has raised more than two million dollars for charity), is pleased to announce the 2013 edition of the Sub City Take Action Tour Featuring The Used. This year the tour will be benefiting the It Gets Better Project, a national organization created to show young LGBT people the levels of happiness, potential, and positivity their lives will reach - if they can just get through their teen years. The It Gets Better Project wants to remind teenagers going through tough times that they are not alone - and it WILL get better.

The tour will feature alt-rock headliner, The Used, with support from We Came As Romans, Crown The Empire, and Mindflow. Kicking off at Las Vegas' House of Blues on January 11th, the annual nationwide charity tour will circle the US through February, showcasing some of the best bands in music today while raising funds and awareness for It Gets Better and the concept that we can all help play a part in making a positive impact. Ten percent of the cost of each ticket purchased will be donated to It Gets Better and Sub City. The 2011 Take Action Tour raised nearly $50,000 to help further the mission of the non-profit, SEX, ETC., with over 19,000 fans attending the 30-stop city tour. Previous benefitting charities of the Sub City Take Action Tour also include Driving For Donors, Do Something, America's Youth Hotline, and The National Hopeline Network. To date, Sub City and the Take Action Tour have donated over 2 million dollars to over 50 non-profit organizations.
Tickets are on sale today, here: VIP ticket options will be available to fans, which include front of the line passes, collectable laminate and signed copy of Vulnerable II.

It Gets Better Project is a place where young people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or struggling to find themselves can see how love and happiness can be a reality in their future.  It's a place where our straight allies can visit and support their friends and family members.  It's a place where people can share their stories, take the It Gets Better Project pledge and watch videos of love and support.

"The It Gets Better Project is thrilled to collaborate with The Used and Hopeless Records on the upcoming Take Action! tour. The Used are powerful voices for young people, well known for their community involvement and outreach, and for encouraging young people to embrace their individuality." Stephanie Laffin, Board of Directors at It Gets Better Project, stated. "We look forward to working together to share the message of the It Gets Better Project with young people across the US, and letting LGBT youth know that it can and will get better."

Bert and Jeph from The Used have created an It Gets Better video to help support the cause. Fans can view the video HERE:

"It's our privilege to work with such a lovely charity that does so much good in this confusing world. Please check out and we'll see you on the Take Action Tour," says The Used frontman, Bert McCracken.

We Came As Romans' guitarist/lyricist, Joshua Moore, also tells us, "We're excited to be back touring in the US after three months. Though it's fun to do international tours, there's nothing like touring our own country, especially with such a well respected band like The Used, who a lot of our band grew up listening to, and on such a renowned annual tour. We can't wait!"

In addition, Hopeless Records, in partner with their non- profit organization Sub City, presents Take Action Compilation Volume 11, a compilation album for charity. This year features two CDs full of unreleased and exclusive tracks from The Used, Bad Religion, AWOL Nation, All Time Low, 3OH!3 and many more. 5% of the suggested retail price from the sale of this compilation will go to continue to fulfill Sub City's mission to connect bands, fans and causes they are passionate about. Selling over 3 million albums worldwide in the span of their career, The Used released their highly anticipated album "Vulnerable" earlier this year on their own label, Anger Music Group partnered with Hopeless Records. The album has sold over 70k copies to date and continues to climb. The band will headline the Take Action Tour benefitting ItGetsBetterProject, a cause they are extremely passionate about.

The band is also excited to announce the release of Vulnerable II- a 2 disc re- issue of the highly successful 2012 release Vulnerable that includes the 12 original tracks, 4 brand new songs, 3 acoustic versions and 3 remixes. Vulnerable II will be released January 22, 2013.

About It Gets Better:
In September 2010, syndicated columnist and author Dan Savage created a YouTube video with his partner Terry Miller to inspire hope for young people facing harassment. In response to a number of students taking their own lives after being bullied in school, they wanted to create a personal way for supporters everywhere to tell LGBT youth that, yes, it does indeed get better.

The It Gets Better Project™ has become a worldwide movement, inspiring more than 50,000 user-created videos viewed more than 50 million times. To date, the project has received submissions from celebrities, organizations, activists, politicians and media personalities, including President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Adam Lambert, Anne Hathaway, Colin Farrell, Matthew Morrison of "Glee", Joe Jonas, Joel Madden, Ke$ha, Sarah Silverman, Tim Gunn, Ellen DeGeneres, Suze Orman, the staffs of The Gap, Google, Facebook, Pixar, the Broadway community, and many more. For us, every video changes a life. It doesn't matter who makes it.
