Portland, Oregon-based post-punk-indie-pop-dande act Pictorials are celebrating the release of their debut EP, Learning, on the band's own Deja View Records.  Comprised of Morgan Nicholson on vocals and guitar, Mike Moreau on bass, keys, and vocals, and Nate Otani on drums and keys, the trio recorded their debut with engineer and producer Dylan Magierek, of Badman Recording Co., at Type Foundry Studios.

Inspired by the likes of XTC, the Wake, Felt, and Factory and Creation Records, the three set out to make music with textured fun in mind - all on instruments they'd never played before.

Thus Learning is aptly titled.  Formed after Nicholson finished touring with Tobacco (Anticon) and Moreau and Otani disbanded Procedures, their electronic project, the Pictorials material came out of a few home recordings off an iPhone with the focus of abandoning their learned instruments for a different music experience.

Otani dropped the bass to learn the drums, which no prior experience; choosing to learn drums on an electronic Simmons kit.  Meanwhile, Nicholson, for the first time, fronted the project on guitar and vocals, and Moreau let go of the guitar to pick up the bass, keys, and vocals.

"We didn't know what we were doing - I didn't know," comments Moreau.  "The band was just for our friends and us.  We didn't necessarily know where we were going to take it, we just knew it was fun and we liked playing with each other."

"The original approach of Pictorials was stepping away from our comfort zones both sonically and instrumentally," furthers Nicholson.  "We wanted to learn a new approach entirely.  Since we didn't really have a direction to begin with, some of the music we listen to - XTC, Felt, Claire Records, Creation Records' bands and such - was coming into our tone already, so we stuck with that sound from the beginning."

But, that isn't the only reason the band decided to title the EP Learning.  They had never recorded at a professional studio before, or with a professional engineer and producer.

Only a band for four months, they played a show in Portland.  One of the concert goers was Badman Recording Co. founder, and local engineer/producer, Dylan Magierek, who approached the band after their set and asked if they wanted to record an EP.

"Dylan approached us after a pretty difficult live set, so it wasn't like we were expecting anything to really come out of it," says Nicholson.  "At any rate, Dylan appreciated at least one of our songs enough to take us into the studio."

Magierek took them into Type Foundry Studios, where the band recorded six songs; four appear on Learning and the other two left-over tracks that may surface on a future release by the band.

"To prepare for the studio, we were on a five-hour rehearsal schedule three times a week, which then came out in the form of the four songs that comprise the existing EP and 2 left over tracks," recalls Nicholson.  "When we finally made it into the recording studio we didn’t want Dylan to know we were so naive to the actual experience.  We tinkered around with instruments and microphones as if we knew what we were doing.  In addition, we played our songs significantly better than we intended, so we ended up being fooled ourselves.  How we approached the recordings was with the decision that we would take no more than five takes a song.  We also limited over dubs to keep it as organic as possible.  Some parts were written on the spot and flaws were kept intact.  We wanted to capture the naivety we were experiencing and learning from leading up to the recording, because we feel that it loaned itself a sonic advantage of what we wanted.  After all, the Type Foundry sessions are the first time we had recorded in a studio, and would also be the first time we were able to hear every detail of our songs."

Following the recording session, the band also got the opportunity to hit the road and support Black Moth Super Rainbow on a sold-out nationwide club tour.

What originally was intended as a simple escape from the banalities of the everyday happenings that Otani, Moreau, and Nicholson were involved in, had become a full-time project - that was growing as organically as the songs themselves.

Combining post-punk elements with more modern dance-oriented rhythms, Pictorials is a fine fit next to many of yesterday's Creation, Factory, and Rough Trade releases their sound recalls.

I know it has become a semi-regular thing for us to promote Kickstarter campaigns, but let's face it, some of the most interesting projects going on these days would not happen if they sought funding through traditional channels. So, in that spirit, we bring you another new campaign.

October 26, 2012 – Los Angeles, CA – Who Killed (or Saved!) the Music Industry?  That’s the big question that industry insiders, fans and musicians have debated endlessly over the last several years.  It’s also the title of a new documentary from musicians Adam Russell (Story of the Year, D.R.U.G.S.) and Ryan Phillips (Story of the Year, Greek Fire) who recently started a Kickstarter campaign to fund the creation of the film, which will explore the evolution of the music business over the last decade with interviews from musicians, producers, managers, record labels and more.

Visit now to pledge funds for the completion of “Who Killed (or Saved!) the Music Industry?”.  Supporters will have the choice of a variety of pledge packages ranging from digital copies and posters to live web chats, private screenings and more.

“This is a project that we've wanted to do for a long time,” says Russell.  “It's a story that has yet to be told from this perspective.”

Having spent years in a successful band which sold hundreds of thousands of albums sold with massive hit radio singles, Russell and Phillips have personally experienced the rise and fall of a once flourishing music business.  The duo have set out to talk to people in the business about the effects of ubiquitous technologies, file sharing, social networking, current role of record labels, the life of a modern day blue collar musician and what lies ahead.

“We really wanted to take a look at how the changes of the past decade or so have affected people in the industry - the artists, producers, engineers, label employees, managers, etc.,” explains Phillips.  “This is not about corporations or the faceless entities that the public often perceives the music business to be. This is about the creative, passionate people, both on stage and behind the scenes, that make their living in this industry.”

Already in the works, Russell and Phillips have spoken to members from All Time Low, Deftones, The Used, Yellowcard, P.O.D., Myles Kennedy (Altar Bridge, Slash), Breathe Carolina, We The Kings, Four Year Strong, Anti-Flag and Dead Sara to name a few and are expected to interview many more in the coming months.

“We've only just begun filming, and already we've had amazing and compelling interviews with a number of bands and artists of significant notoriety,” says Phillips.  “We have only scratched the surface in regards to our list of individuals we wish to include in this film.”

“In a time of great uncertainty and hardship, we are taking a chance, betting on ourselves and putting all of our energy into something positive,” adds Russell.  “This is a film that we believe is relevant not only to music fans, but also to art, culture, and society in general. We are not asking for donations, and this is not a charity. We are looking for micro investment in a project that will have cultural impact. With your contributions not only are you supporting the arts and two passionate and creative individuals, you will also get some pretty awesome rewards and prizes; not to mention the satisfaction of being part of something rad.”

Folk Rock Songwriter Blake Ian and Pop Artist Peter Tunney Elevate Vinyl Records to Fine Art

For Immediate Release
Folk Rock Songwriter Blake Ian and Pop Artist Peter Tunney Elevate Vinyl Records to Fine Art
(New York, NY) ---October 24, 2012
Art and vinyl collectors will meet up tonight at Peter Tunney's 73 Franklin Street gallery in Tribeca to celebrate the 7” vinyl reissue of Blake Ian's single “Play The King.” It is a limited edition pressing of 270 copies featuring original artwork numbered and autographed by Tunney. Ian will perform a few songs while Tunney autographs copies starting at 7:00 PM EST.
“This is one of my most simple and focused recordings,” comments Ian. “It represents the kind of song I have been trying to write for years,” he continues.
Think Violent Femmes jamming with Johnny Cash on a one-take Sun Studios session. Ian wrote both “Play The King” and b-side “Somewhere” in just a few hours and recorded both live in one take in his home studio. Ian produced and mixed “Play the King.” Sterling Sound mastered lacquer.
“It was just me on guitar and my long-time drummer Lee Diamond on snare drum with just a few mics," says Ian.
“Play The King” is also a new type of release for 27 Productions; the record label that Ian owns and operates. The NYC-based singer-songwriter outpost intentionally only releases digital singles.
For those unable to attend the gallery showing and official launch of “Play The King,” copies with digital download cards are also currently available for purchase online at
“I love the words and I love old records,” comments Tunney. “I love to play with words in my art. This was a lot of fun for me,” he continues.
Tunney used old lyric sheets of Blake's work along with collages of old newspapers and burned books to create the cover art. Life-size representations can be seen below.
Blake Ian has been visible in the NYC folk rock scene for the some time now. He’s released three full-length albums: The Blake Ian Theory (2000), The Basement Waves (2003) and Alchemist (2005). He has toured the country and opened for Donovan, Kenny Loggins, Eric Burdon and The Animals, Leon Russell, Duncan Sheik, Jeffrey Gaines and Christopher Cross. He is a producer as well. He has a hand in virtually every aspect of all of the songwriters’ works that he releases through his own label 27 Productions.
Peter Tunney has become THE name in NYC pop art in recent years from his Franklin Street factory downtown to his Miami gallery in the center of Graffiti Park which has been a centerpiece at Art Basel. His work is up for auction at the elite Phillips de Pury & Company along side the works of Warhol, Basquiat and other kings of modern art. Three of his pieces now stand as massive billboards along the highways in and out of Manhattan. Tunney collectors include Jay-Z, Olivia Wilde and Kid Rock.

A Silent Film To Kick Off North American Tour With Blue October

Los Angeles, CA - October 22, 2012 - A Silent Film will kick off the first leg of their 20-date North American fall tour with Blue October on October 31st. The two bands will work their way across the U.S. before heading up to Canada, down the west coast, and into the southwest before wrapping a two-night-stand at the House of Blues in Dallas, TX. A Silent Film is currently touring in support of their latest full-length album release Sand & Snow (Creative Media/EMI), available online and in stores everywhere. Listen to the band's new single "Harbour Lights" now and watch the video for Danny, Dakota & the Wishing Well. Previously, A Silent Film has toured with OneRepublic, Civil Twilight, Smashing Pumpkins, Temper Trap and Sleigh Bells.
Formed in Oxford, UK, and recently relocating to the U.S., A Silent Film's expansive and poetic pop-rock sound has garnered comparisons to everyone from Coldplay to The Killers to U2. Sand & Snow is just a snapshot of the fevered creativity inspired by an impulsive tryst with Americana. "Jack Kerouac and Bob Dylan are massive inspirations to me. I felt like I always had a kinship with America. As soon as I could experience it, and I didn't have to read it in a book anymore, it changed my process; I wanted to live and breathe it," vocalist/pianist Robert Stevenson says of the creative necessity of the move.

The band self-produced Sand & Snow in their new Arizona home-rehearsal studio and latterly at Sonic Ranch studios, El Paso, TX (recently home to Animal Collective, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Beach House). Mix engineer Alan Moulder - best known for his work with The Killers, Death Cab For Cutie, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Foo Fighters - tied the album together with a mix that favors theatrical dynamics and scene-setting ambience. Collectively, they created an unyielding positivity in Sand & Snow, a spirited and romantic musicality that belies an unashamedly upbeat pop attitude.

To hear A Silent Film check out the video for the inspirational epic
Danny, Dakota & the Wishing Well and listen to their euphoric, soaring new single"Harbour Lights,"which Robert describes as capturing the liberation of a breakup. "You know that feeling when someone leaves you in a relationship, they have moved on and you're left behind?" he says of the track documenting the wisdom gleaned from self-discovery. "It's the peace you make after the mourning."

A Silent Film is Robert Stevenson - vocals and piano, Karl Bareham - guitar, Ali Hussain - bass, and Spencer Walker - drums.

October 16, 2012 – Los Angeles, CA – Orange County based No Sleep Records has announced the addition of UK rock band Departures to it’s burgeoning roster with plans to release their sophomore album, Teenage Haze, on November 27 in conjunction with In At The Deep End Records who will release the album to the rest of the world on November 26.  Fans can check out Departures new song, “Planting Weeds,” streaming now, exclusively at

“The dudes in Balance and Composure recently played with Departures while overseas, and Bailey shortly after told me that i NEEDED to sign Departures - so i checked it out, and the rest is history,” explains No Sleep president Chris Hansen.  “I am beyond stoked to add these guys to the roster and to be a part of their sophomore LP Teenage Haze in North America.”

"We are incredibly excited to be working with No Sleep Records,” adds Departures’ vocalist James McKean.  “We're big fans of the label and having toured with a couple of No Sleep bands we've heard nothing but good things. We love the bands on the roster and we feel honoured to now be a part of it."

Formed in 2007, Departures features McKean (vocals), Daniel Nash (guitar), Andrew Traynor (guitar), Pierre Charlesworth (bass) and Alistair Morrison (drums) who meld a unique blend of modern hardcore and melodic rock for an intense sonic revolution.  The band has since found themselves sharing the stage with the likes of Touché Amoré, Pianos Become The Teeth, Seahaven, Azriel, Heart In Hand and Balance & Composure to name a few.

In 2012, Departures released a 7”, Green Turns To Red, Then Turns To Gold, in the UK on In At The Deep End Records and quickly began work on their followup full-length sophomore album, Teenage Haze, soon thereafter.

Teenage Haze is the sound of growing up.  It’s a hardcore album written by a band that doesn’t listen solely to hardcore.  Instead, the band inject their influences of 90’s emo and melodic rock into their hardcore roots creating a record that’s hard hitting yet easily accessible to diverse fanbase.

Fans can tune in for updates now at .

Teenage Haze Track List:
