The Royalty: "Lovers"

The Royalty: LOVERS

Most of the time, the labels on the front of cds make ridiculous statements or comparisons of the band purely for the sake of name recognition. This, however, is one of the rare times when they’ve done a truly decent job. The “Like Amy Winehouse went on holiday with Vampire Weekend” is actually surprisingly apt, though in reality Duffy may have been a closer comparison despite being a lesser known name. There is a definite 60’s vibe in spots and a super indie rock vibe in others, a trait that we've become accustomed to with local favorites Fitz and The Tantrums. With one foot in the past and the other foot firmly in the present both of these bands look to appeal to an incredibly wide range of listener (and yes, it would be really cool to see them on the same bill at some point).

LOVERS, The Royalty's first release for Victory, seems to be receiving a lot of good notes in national and international press. One thing that seems to have escaped mention so far is the artwork for the album. Cd artwork is sadly getting lost in the shuffle of digital conversion. The Royalty, however, have made an effort towards still taking this artform seriously with their heat sensitive cover. This is reason enough to seek out the physical version. This is a good album on first listen, but gets better and better the more you play it. It's one of those albums that by the third or fourth time through you will find yourself singing all the choruses without even realizing it.

Best Track: Album closer "Won't Be Long"

For Fans Of: Fitz and The Tantrums, Duffy, Vampire Weekend, Young The Giant
