Candy Hearts Announce Tour Dates with Mixtapes

Brooklyn based independent label Kind Of Like Records is proud to announce the local quartet CANDY HEARTS has joined its ever growing roster. Set to release their sophomore album Everything’s Amazing And Nobody’s Happy on September 27th, Candy Hearts have recently announced a handful of tour dates with Mixtapes, as well as a few solo shows, which includes the Kind Of Like Records Showcase on August 8 in Brooklyn, NY at The Archeron. See all tour dates below.
Everything’s Amazing And Nobody’s Happy

1) Tongue Tied
2) Lighter Than The Air
3) She’s So Cool
4) Good Enough
5) Sleepy Kisses
6) Asbury Park
7) When I’m With You
8) Something Special
9) Jawbreaker
10) What I’m Made Of
11) I Want Out
12) Everything’s Alright
Everything’s Amazing And Nobody’s Happy kicks off with catchy album opener “Tongue Tied,” setting the tone for this sunny, indie pop record filled with songs about friendship, crushes, accidentally drinking too much, and driving around the suburbs listening to Jawbreaker. The contradictory album title “seemed like a perfect fit for the record because it dealt with themes we felt like a lot of people deal with their whole lives,” explains vocalist/guitarist Mariel Loveland. “It’s about that feeling of having everything you thought you wanted, yet something is still missing or it’s just not enough,” a feeling many teens and young 20-somethings can relate to.
Brimming with conflicted and sometimes gloomy lyrics, Loveland acknowledges the contradiction between her lyrics, and the cheeriness of Candy Hearts’ music. “There is an evident duality in a great deal of the songs on the record and I think that’s just because of who I am,” she says. “I don’t write songs when I’m sad. I write songs to make myself feel better about sad situations or when I’m really, really happy and I think that comes across. For me, if I want to mope around I’ll throw on a My Bloody Valentine record and space out. For songwriting, I want to make people feel happy or at least a little less alone.”
Self-produced and recorded by Loveland and guitarist Kris Hayes, Everything’s Amazing And Nobody’s Happy was engineered, mixed, and mastered by Easy Plateau Productions (Hayes’ production company), and half of the record was tracked live. Everything’s Amazing… is Candy Hearts’ follow up to their acclaimed debut Ripped Jeans And Silly Dreams, which was released as a FREE download through, and can be downloaded here:
Candy Hearts is Mariel Loveland (vocals, guitar), Kris Hayes (guitar), Christian Stefos Migliorese (bass), and Christina Picciano (drums).

Samiam: TRIPS

TRIPS on September 6th...
But They're "Over Now" at A.V. CLUB

BERKELEY, CA – Highly influential indie rockers SAMIAM will continue their legacy on September 6th with the release of their eighth full-length album TRIPS via Hopeless Records. Not only is this their first release in nearly five years, it’s their second in over ten years. Special pre-order packages are available now from the Hopeless Records website, which include combinations of CD’s, vinyl, pins, and t-shirts. In anticipation of the new record, the A.V. Club is now streaming “Over Now” and can be heard by visiting their website Supporting Trips, Samiam will gear up for a headlining tour with opener Walter Schriefels (Rival Schools, Quicksand, Gorilla Biscuits) that kicks off on September 9th in Minneapolis and concludes on September 24th in Philadelphia at Riot Fest East, sharing the stage with Descendents, Hot Water Music, Plow United, and many others. The band will also be returning to The Fest in Gainesville on October 30th alongside Hot Water Music, Bouncing Souls, and Lifetime after wrapping a Fall European headlining tour.

“[Samiam guitarist] Sean [Kennerly] saw a painting by Chris Johanson (who’s art we used for the album Astray) with the word ‘trips’ in it,” says vocalist Jason Beebout about the album title. “That word really sums up what the record is about – the journey of life through memories, obstacles, and places. Each trip is an adventure in itself and all a part of the whole adventure – trippy.” Trips was produced, engineered, and recorded on two-inch tape by Chris Dugan (Green Day, U2, Iggy Pop) at Green Day’s personal studio Jingletown in San Francisco, CA and was mixed by Alex Newport (At The Drive-In, Mars Volta, Deathcab For Cutie, Knapsack) in New York City. “One day, I was surfing with Billy Joe and told him we were getting ready to record and he offered to let us use his studio. That place is like the f*cking Starship Enterprise!” explains Beebout. “Plus, Chris Dugan offered to record us, which was double t*ts because he’s so awesome and I knew then that we were going to get something that would sound really amazing.” With the release of Trips, Samiam has returned to their signature sound reminiscent of fan favorite albums Clumsy and Astray. Kicking off with the in-your-face track “80 West”, jam packed with heart-pounding drums and screaming guitars, Samiam have picked up right where they left off without missing a stride.
Following the breakup of the 924 Gilman Street mainstay Isocracy (featuring vocalist Jason Beebout), Samiam formed in late 1988 and broke out of the Berkeley music scene with peers Green Day and Jawbreaker. They released seven full-length albums – three on New Red Archives, two on Hopeless Records, and two major label releases (the critically-acclaimed Clumsy on Atlantic and You Are Freaking Me Out on Ignition/Tommy Boy) between 1989 and 2006. Samiam has toured extensively throughout North America, Europe, South America, and Japan with bands such as Bad Religion, Green Day, Blink-182, Sense Field, The Toadies, among many others.
Samiam is Jason Beebout (vocals), Sergie Loobkoff (guitar), Charlie Walker (drums), Sean Kennerly (guitar), and Billy Bouchard (bass).

Hostage Calm Touring with Rival Schools in October

For Immediate Release

Hostage Calm Touring with Rival Schools in October
Select Dates with Tigers Jaw, Balance & Composure

CT’s Hostage Calm will be supporting Rival Schools on tour this fall. The trek begins October 14 in Philadelphia and wraps up October 28 in Teaneck, NJ. Select dates will also feature Tigers Jaw and Balance & Composure.

Hostage Calm’s latest self-titled release is out now on Run For Cover Records.

About Hostage Calm:

Displaying an in-depth understanding of Silent Majority, Turning Point and Quicksand, Hostage Calm's well-received 2008 debut, Lens, was a comprehensive lesson in what punk and hardcore should sound like. Jagged-yet infectious melodies effortlessly merged with beefy power chords and politically charged battle cries while fiery anthems formed amidst uncommon song structures.

With that creative momentum and the positive response from fans and critics alike, the band took a year to write and a year to record its self-titled follow-up for Boston's Run for Cover Records. It’s safe to say that the quintet's knack for composing intelligent, passionate tunes is matched only by that of its musical ambition. While Hostage Calm continues to hint at those Dag Nasty arpeggios and the skipping Descendents-esque beats, these new songs are pushed in unclassifiable directions, cradled by lush layers of jangling acoustic guitars, quick tambourine hits and resonating piano accompaniments.

Sonically, a good point of reference starts at The Smith’s The Queen Is Dead, with its blending of styles into one cohesive and all encompassing indie / pop album.
Hostage Calm never compromises its energy, but touches lightly on everything from doo wop ( “Rebel Fatigues” ) and new wave ( “Ballots / Stones” ) to Latin ( “Wither On The Vine” ) and power pop ( “War On A Feeling” ). Vocalist Chris Martin’s suave melodies are chosen with the utmost care; they have a particularly relaxed quality that reveals a less excessive rendition of the 1980’s. And while he’s just about as political as ever, he doesn't hesitate to delve into more personal narratives, yet spares us of any cringe-worthy melodramatics.

Don't be intimidated - “pop” isn’t a four-letter word. In context with the substance-less drivel that excretes from the radio waves these days, it’s sometimes easy to forget. But Hostage Calm executes an infectious effort with actual lyrical and musical purpose. Truly a singular effort, there's a bit of something for every notch in the music-fan spectrum. Still, Hostage Calm never completely strays from the scene responsible for its inception. If you like music - regardless of genre - you should be paying attention.

The Reserve

America has a long held fascination with UK rock bands dating back to the days of The Beatles, The Who, and The Rolling Stones. Today that fascination extends into bands like Arctic Monkeys, Muse, and one of our newest finds, THE RESERVE.

Newly signed to UK label, I Am Mighty Records, a micro label that makes up for what it lacks in size with an undying passion for what they do that is impressive in today's music environment. They will be releasing the debut EP from The Reserve,  "We're Almost There" in September. The first video from the band for the song "Rewind" has just been released and is posted below (authorized by the label).

The Reserve - Rewind from iammightyrecords on Vimeo.
Hailing from Newport, South Wales The Reserve just got together in 2010 from the remnants of Take The Floor. Once the EP is out the band plans to tour the UK extensively. While there are no US tour dates set as yet, that will undoubtedly swing based on sales of the EP and interest in the band. While physical release in the US is not yet planned, the EP will be available on iTunes worldwide.

Amy Winehouse Joins the 27 Club

Amy Winehouse has joined a club of which you really don't want to be a member, the 27 club. She joins a long list of rockstars that have met an unfortunate end at the age of 27 including Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Brian Jones, Kurt Cobain, and more. While cause of death has not been released yet, history would point to the possibility of drugs being a factor.

Friday Night at The Slidebar: The Jukebox Romantics

This Friday night the lovely boys of The Jukebox Romantics will be bringing their own special brand of East Coast punk/ska to The Slidebar in downtown Fullerton. After garnering good notices on last years Warped tour the boys are back with a new album "A Lion and A Guy" and a national tour this summer in support. These guys are destined to be one of those bands that you are going to look back fondly on the days when you could see them for free at a bar, later down the road when they are headlining big venues, so don't say we didn't warn you. Oh, and we have it on good authority that how rowdy they get is in direct relation to how many drinks you buy them, so for goodness sake be generous.

This is a FREE show for the 21+ crowd only!

The Magic is in The Music: Brian Fallon

There are certain people in the music industry for whom I can find no better descriptive term than to say they are magical. Everything they do and everything they touch is so amazing that a better word needs to be invented to describe it. This subset of musicians may differ a bit for different people but it would not be at all surprising to find the same names repeated on various peoples lists of who they find magical. One such person is certainly Brian Fallon. While he will probably never escape the Bruce Springsteen comparisons, make no mistake that this is an utterly unique and talented individual.  For anyone who has not yet found their way to the magic that is The Gaslight Anthem, then run, don't walk, and don't waffle between which album to buy, just get them all.

Once you have thoroughly fallen in love with The Gaslight Anthem, you will be ready to tackle Fallon's latest offering, in the form of side-project The Horrible Crowes. The Crowes will be releasing Elsie on September 6th, but right now you can stream "Behold The Hurricane" on Rolling Stone's website. (ignore that the Rolling Stone site says the 16th....the label says the 6th). As of July 19th you will be able to download the track from Amazon if you don't want to wait for the whole album.

Blacklist Royals/Street Dogs Split EP

July 14, 2011

Offering Free Download of “Golden Hands“ Via
Playing Warped Tour Through July 28

Blacklist Royals
Click for hi-res
Nashville punk n’ rollers BLACKLIST ROYALS are excited to announce a split EP with Street Dogs, slated for release later this year on Paper + Plastick Records. The band is road testing the new songs, as well as cranking out fan favorites from their highly praised sophomore record SEMPER LIBERI, on the 2011 Vans Warped Tour, where they have been performing since the beginning of the month, and wrap on July 28th. More information regarding the split will be announced shortly.
Boasting two new songs from both bands, Blacklist Royals have partnered with Alternative Press to offer fans a FREE MP3 download of a B-side from the recording session titled “Golden Hands,” which can be downloaded here:
“We are really proud of the song” says Blacklist Royals drummer Rob Rufus. “It branches out in a new direction for us a bit, both musically and topically, so we're all really happy people can check it out for free! It gives people no excuse not to at least give it a chance.”
Though this is the band’s first official outing on the Warped Tour, Blacklist Royals got their start at the tour like so many other bands. “We first did Warped Tour right when the band formed in 2006 playing to the entrance line and hustling CDs to kids in the crowd,” Rufus admits. “So it is really amazing to be an actual part of the tour now, and as exhausted as we are from doing it in a van we could never take the step up for granted. It has been a really amazing way for us to reach new, different fans. Our road crew, the tour staff and Kia Stage crew are all great. Plus we get to watch Against Me, Street Dogs, Sharks, The Exposed, Less Than Jake, and Lucero every day. Not a bad way to spend a fucking summer!!!”

Warped Tour Pomona 2011: Big D and The Kids Table

David McWane, frontman of Big D and The Kids Table from Boston did his best to bring the ska-punk to the crowd. Not a fan of Fox News, McWane is nonetheless a big fan of Fosters, or so his onstage antics would suggest. Currently raging through their third consecutive and fifth overall, summer on Warped, these boys show the rest how it’s done.

Chcuk Ragan to release "Covering Ground" September 13th

July 11, 2011
"With his gravely vocals and stirring guitar melodies, [Chuck Ragan's] solo work is cathartic, country-drenched old-timey folk, informed by the twang of Steve Earle, the urgency of Springsteen, and the dusty back roads of Woodie Guthrie’s California." - Crawdaddy!
"Most people know Chuck as the scratchy voiced frontman/guitarist of Florida punk outfit, Hot Water Music, but his solo effort swings a totally different way. Smashing together acoustic, folk, indie, and even a little country, Chuck Ragan has carved out quite the little niche for himself." - FILTER

Click for hi-res
If any artist has earned the right to name a record COVERING GROUND, CHUCK RAGAN is deserving of that honor, with hundreds of thousands of miles covered over nearly the last two decades. Set for release on September 13th, Covering Ground is singer/songwriter Chuck Ragan’s third full-length studio record, though he has released seemingly countless singles, 7-inches, live records, collaborative splits, and appeared on numerous compilations. Ragan will be covering ground this Fall in support of the record with tour dates to be announced shortly.
Growing up on a healthy dose of Cajun, Southern Baptist gospel, and bluegrass music, Ragan’s sound is a blend of folk, roots, and gospel, but Covering Ground is essentially a blue collar, Americana record filled with honest road songs. “The majority, if not all of these songs were either written on the road or they are about the road. There aren't any hidden meanings within the title at all. It is what it is and it depicts what I've done since the release of the last record, as well as the majority of my life,” states Chuck Ragan, who has played thousands of shows across five continents. “But the fact of the matter is, some of us have been raised to live and thrive in one place throughout our lives, while others have constantly been on the move. There's no telling which is for the better or for the worse. That all depends on the person we wish to be and the perspective we choose to view.”

Songs such as “Nomad By Fate” and “Wish On The Moon,” which sound like a soundtrack for freighthoppers traveling cross-country, reinforce the album’s title, but the lovelorn and openly honest songs “Right As Rain” and “Meet You In The Middle” exemplify the sacrifice of being a road warrior. "'Right As Rain' is an undying confession of love," admits Ragan. As the road constantly beckons Ragan, he says "The hardest thing for me to do nowadays is leave home. This song is simply about being away from my wife when we're both busted up about it and wanting nothing more than for her to sleep sound and well, knowing that no one on this earth could love her anymore than I do."
Recorded between three different tour this year, Chuck Ragan and his band, Jon Gaunt (fiddle) and Joe Ginsberg (upright bass), entered Fireside Sound Studios in Silverlake, CA with Blind Melon’s Christopher Thorn in the Spring. In keeping with the ideals of Chuck Ragan’s yearly Revival Tour, which is a collection of like-minded musicians that collaborate with each other on the road, Ragan invited new and old friends to join him on the record. The Camaraderie, as Ragan refers to it, includes Gaunt and Ginsberg, as well as Christopher Thorn (mandolin, guitar, lap steel, banjo), Rich Steff (organ, piano, accordion) and Todd Beene (pedal steel) of Lucero, Chris Phillips of Squirrel Nut Zippers (bodhran, tambourines, percussion), Frank Turner (backing vocals), Audra Mae (backing vocals), and Brian Fallon of The Gaslight Anthem (backing vocals).
Chuck Ragan has plans to tour the world continuously this year, and will unveil tour dates shortly. This year alone, Chuck has supported Social Distortion in the US, Dropkick Murphys in Canada, and headlined his own dates in North America with his Revival Tour slated to tour the UK this Fall.
