What's Fair: "Fill The Space"

They've got pedigree, with Timmy Costello and Justin Valenti from the now defunct Park. They've got charming female harmonizing courtesy of Jo Pollock and Faith Wheaton, who at times seem a bit reminiscent of Meg and Dia, or Tegan and Sara. They've got really solid songwriting throughout most of this album, although the last two tracks don't quite hold up against the others. What they do not have is edge. Even when the music ramps up a bit, for example on "Beg Me", the vocals just feel too restrained and too safe.

With the splintering of Paramore of late, the path is certainly wide open for a female fronted band with really good songwriting to steal the crown from Haley, but Jo Pollock is going to have to dig deep and show us some emotion behind the words. In keeping the emotional timbre too similar from song to song, the cohesiveness of style becomes boring. Interjecting a bit of boy vs girl tradeoffs might inject just enough to kickstart this material from good to great. It will be interesting to see how this band progresses.

Taken individually, these songs work, and are being used currently by MTV in some of their television programming. However, the album as a whole, though the sound is certainly pretty, would benefit from a bit more bite, a step away from the comfort zone.

New Years Day: Saturday at The Wire

If you find yourself with no plans for tomorrow night then head east to the charming little city of Upland to find New Years Day playing at The Wire. This is a tiny little club that is an amazing place to see under-discovered and under-appreciated bands, which describes New Years Day quite well. They have been on the verge of success for a really long time, yet never quite made that leap into the mainstream. In other words, this is a band good enough to be headlining the House of Blues but instead is available to you in this tiny little club. So don't miss this.

Get all the details and directions on The Wire website. (and be sure to park around back of the club rather than the front street so you don't get a ticket).

JUNIOR BATTLES
RELEASE FULL-LENGTH DEBUT
IDLE AGES

Toronto, ON – After much speculation, Paper + Plastick is excited to officially welcome Toronto’s JUNIOR BATTLES to its ever growing roster. Slated to release the band’s full-length debut, Idle Ages, on June 28th on vinyl, CD and digitally, Junior Battles have posted the first song and album opener “Seventeen” on their homepage www.idleages.com. Information regarding a pre-sale and a US tour will be announced shortly.
“I started to like JUNIOR BATTLES because of the 90s melodic, pop-punk influence,” admits Paper + Plastick founder Vinnie Fiorello, “but if that was the hook that got me on board to start with, then the new songs have me becoming a true fan of the band. The 90's pop-punk blasts are still there, but on the new record the band adds in musical twists and turns, sudden stops and starts, and melody mixed with gruff vocals. The band mixes layers of influence under a nice candy coating of pop punk nostalgia without ever being a throwback."
Fueled by the call and response vocal duo of guitarist Aaron Zorgel and Sam Sutherland, Idle Ages is chock full of shout along verses and choruses that helped the band accrue loyal fans since forming in 2008. Recorded with Steve Rizun (The Flatliners, O Pioneers, The Snips) at his Drive Studios in Ontario, Canada, Idle Ages has been the better part of a year in the making. Idle Ages was expected to be finished by Christmas of 2010, the band’s insatiable urge to tour lead them out on the road twice while trying to wrap the record. Zorgel comments on the delay by stating “We figure, who knows how many chances we're going to have to make a full-length record? We wanted to take our time with everything, and make sure we were going to love it 10 years later. And that meant not settling for anything, ever.”

Click for hi-res version
Not settling allowed the band to explore a bit on this full-length, as opposed to their previous 7-inches and EPs. “We've always felt like a full-length is a great chance to make some weird choices you couldn't on a 7" or with an EP,” interjects Sutherland. “It's a chance to do something a little more grandiose, and we wanted to reach out to some friends and get them to add to this monstrosity we were trying to make. It helps keep things varied, so you're not just listening to me and Aaron drone on about our lives for half an hour.” Enlisting a diverse group of friends, Idle Ages features guest appearances from ex-Hold Steady member Franz Nicolay (piano, organ, banjo), Bomb The Music Industry’s Matt Keegan (trombone), and hardcore vocals from fellow Canuck Damian Abraham of F*cked Up.
Touching on topics nearly every 20-something fan who grew up on a healthy diet of punk rock can relate to, Idle Ages is a reflection on one’s life and how your past ideals have influenced your present state of mind, and how that will affect the course of your life. “[Aaron and I are] both a few years out of school, and had reached a point in our mid-20s where we felt kind of lost. It’s not a record about nostalgia, but there's a lot of looking back at the way you felt when you were 15, 16, and how that affects you now that you're 25 and you've kind of turned into an adult without realizing it,” says Sutherland. Album opener “Seventeen” not only sets the lyrical tone for the entire album (“We only answer to ourselves/we always stayed true to the ideals we held/ when we were sober and seventeen/ so you wake up every morning and you compromise/ it’s easy to forget the places where you tried to draw the line”), but musically, with the band’s catchy brand of pop-punk shining through, filled with sing-along choruses and hooks galore.
As Sutherland sums it up, “We ended up using a lot of ages as signposts along the way. I felt a really specific way about the way I thought the world should work when I was 17. And this record is about trying to figure out if you were right.”
Junior Battles is Aaron Zorgel (vocals, guitar), Sam Sutherland (vocals, guitar), Justin Taylor (bass, vocals), and Joel Dickau (drums, vocals).

Farewell Continental Tour

Side projects are a fabulous way for well known musicians to explore facets of themselves they are unable to expose in their primary bands. Justin Pierre (Motion City Soundtrack) has undertaken just such a path with his new side project Farewell Continental, whose debut album comes out May 10th.

So Cal will have three chances to check them out in very small, intimate rooms in mid-June. Buying now would be a good idea as these venues are, it bears repeating, VERY small.

June 11th at Chain Reaction - Anaheim
June 12th at The Wire - Upland
June 13th at The Satellite - Silver Lake

For the full tour schedule check out Facebook.

SPIN magazine has a song available for download if you are interested in learning more.

Automatic Static: Friends & Lovers

Sacramento, while frequently referred to as a less than perfect place to live, has turned out some amazing bands, including Middle Class Rut and Deftones. Automatic Static continues that tradition with a face-melting, albeit short (6 song), release on Gas Can Music called Friends & Lovers.

This is the type of heavy rock that every fourteen year old boy who picks up an electric guitar dreams of doing. The kind of rock that calls to mind big stages, huge crowds, and the kind of glamorous rockstar life kids picture in their minds. The funny thing is that the guys that do this best are people like Zac that have been around long enough to know that rockstar is an dirty word and being a musician is a hard way to make a living. The guys that last in this industry are not the ones that want to make music, but the ones that have to, and Zac definitely falls into the latter category. The music on this EP would easily fit together with any Fuel, Stone Temple Pilots or The Used you may have in your collection. Unlike many EP releases, this is not just an exercise in potential, but an exhibition of fierce style.

Twin Atlantic: Free

With a name like Sam McTrusty, I still question whether the Twin Atlantic frontman is leading a secret life as the alter ego of a super hero. That, however, is merely a sidenote to the fact that May 3rd brings the digital only release of of the new album, Free by Twin Atlantic. This is the follow-up to 2009's highly lauded Vivarium, and believe it or not is even better. If you happen to be in Europe you get them for the spring and early summer, but hopefully we will get them back in the US by fall. Check out the video for the title single on YouTube now.

Papa Roach Tour Heads to Anaheim

This coming Monday (4/25) the Papa Roach/Finger Eleven Tour hits the Anaheim House of Blues. While they are not currently enjoying the platinum level success of earlier days, Jacoby and the boys are a really fun band to see live, and House of Blues Anaheim is a really excellent room to see a show. They are also a band that, based on past experience, is really good about playing their hits live, much to the delight of the fans (as opposed to those charming people who ignore their hits in order to focus on new material - you know who you are).

So all of you who resist going out on a week night due to school or work commitments, stop it already. Life is too short not to have some fun. Buy tickets NOW.

GOD HATES... SKA?!!
Westboro Baptist Church Protests
LESS THAN JAKE

LESS THAN JAKE
Click for hi-res
Gainesville, FL - Just when you thought you heard it all with Reality TV stars vying for a chance at running the US, seemingly wholesome punk/pop/ska band LESS THAN JAKE were on the receiving end of picket signs and protests from the Westboro Baptist Church during their show last weekend in Pensacola, FL. Asked why he thinks his band would be targeted by the controversial religious group, drummer Vinnie Fiorello replied, "I have no idea. I mean, let's face the facts: Less Than Jake doesn't exactly send parents running for cover. The fact that we do have a certain amount of obscenity and are fairly liberal could and obviously did ruffle some Christian feathers."
Faced with slightly more than a dozen picketers with "signs that talked about whore mongering, adultery, sin," Vinnie was a bit perplexed by the reaction. "It had to be a slow night at the bible study last night... Or they heard the truth that we are a traveling band who love Satan but hate guns," he told AltPress.com. He added, "I find it silly... Grouping us with [recent targets, like Lady Gaga, fallen soldiers, Justin Bieber] is like comparing apples to oranges. Pop punk with a penchant for up stroke guitar and using the word 'f*ck' while drinking high-powered alcohol is not anywhere close to the headline grabbers on that list."
Whether or not Less Than Jake belong on that list of WBC targets is rather debatable, but it's still baffling to Vinnie exactly why. "It's really a nonevent, but it did happen," he concludes. "They have a right to say what's within their rights... as long as I'm allowed to create whatever art I want to."
Less Than Jake recently re-released expanded versions of 1996's Losing Streak and 1998's Hello Rockview on their own label Sleep It Off and are gearing up for some major announcements shortly. The band just wrapped up a handful of Florida dates and are preparing for the entire Vans Warped Tour this Summer.

Help Light The Night

Help Me Become a Champion For Cures!

04/18/11
Dear Friends,
We are partnering with 909 Magazine and participating in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Light The Night Walk in the Inland Empire at California Baptist University on 10/22/11, and I would like to ask for your support.
As you know, this charity is very dear to me, and I participate in these events each year to raise funds.
LLS is the single largest nonprofit contributor to blood cancer research – more than $750 million has been invested in life-saving science.

Critical treatment innovations have originated through blood cancer research – radiation, chemotherapy, stem cell transplantation, and new targeted therapies. Nearly 50% of all FDA approved cancer drugs in the past decade were for blood cancer. Many are now being tested for other cancers and other illnesses.

Last year over 40,000 patients received financial assistance from LLS totaling over $6 million. And LLS provides information and support to patients and their caregivers all free. And to help patients during this time of crisis, LLS’s financial aid and co-pay programs are critically important.

Light The Night is a special night, celebrating and commemorating lives touched by cancer.
Your help will make a difference! Please consider making a donation to LLS on my behalf. To join me in the Walk or to donate online, visit My Fundraising Page.
If each of you donated only $1 we would far exceed our goal, so please take just a moment to help out.
Thank you for your support in the fight against blood cancer.
Thank you,
Deena McClusky

Coachella Weekend Comes to a Close

While we did not shoot Coachella this year we do recommend you seek out video of the bands we considered the highlights of the weekend. While all the buzz seemed to be centered around the dance acts this year, we were certainly most blown away by three indie acts, two of which are from right here in So Cal. Cold War Kids, Jack's Mannequin, and The National were the most inspired and most sublimely executed sets of the weekend.

While Jack's Mannequin only played one song from their upcoming release, and had a relatively short set as an early in the day act, it was amazing to see Andrew looking much healthier and stronger than he has since coming back from his illness. They will be heading out on a pretty major tour in June, so be sure to make plans now. DETAILS HERE.

While very few bands can pull off understated and restrained very well live without coming out boring, The National are in a class all their own. While the smoke machines were extremely unnecessary, the set was beautiful. As for the Cold War Kids, powerful and amazing as always. While the official broadcast hasn't come up as archived yet, this piece is decent. The only downfall of their official coverage was the hard time the camera men were having with the stage lights.

Pete Yorn: HOB Anaheim 4/10/11

Sunday night saw the one two punch of Ben Kweller and Pete Yorn take the stage of House of Blues Anaheim. Ben Kweller opened the show ably, playing solo, save for the very large backdrop bearing his name. Without the encumbrance of a band, he won alot of new fans with his stunning voice, jovial personality, and love of Jaeger. The Kweller fans in the room were extremely pleased when he announced, near the end of his set, that he was about to play “Wasted and Ready” from his 2002 solo debut, which has remained a favorite of many fans all these years later.

Pete Yorn is touring not only on the back of his recently released self-titled disc, but also in celebration of the re-released and re-mastered deluxe version of his ten year old Musicforthemorningafter. Ten years after the fact, he has developed both his vocal technique and confidence to a point where it makes these old songs sound new again. Like in LA a few nights prior, he opened with his Smiths’ cover of “Panic”, and also paid homage to Joy Division and Springsteen during the set.

With a brilliantly tight and lengthy set it would be fair to say that if you have ever had a favorite Pete Yorn song, he played it. This is a rare thing from an artist five albums and ten years in. No matter how much you like someone, they have a tendency to leave out at least one or two songs people really want to hear. But really, the highlight of the show was the palpable sense of joy in the room emanating from Pete and the band. These are guys who have been around the block, are way more than competent, and no longer really have anything to prove. They were therefore able to tear through this glorious set in a relaxed and thoroughly enjoyable manner, and seemed to be having just as much fun with it as the audience. This amazing vibe carried over into the audience with a good bit of singing along and dancing (particular shout out to the tall guy near the back of the floor section). If you are any where near one of the cities left on this tour, be sure not to miss this excellent show.

Fight Fair To Release “Broken” EP May 17 on Triple Crown Records

On May 17, CA’s FIGHT FAIR returns with a new Triple Crown Records EP titled Broken, which harkens back to the band’s roots. “After trying something new on our debut LP California Kicks, we wanted to do a record of songs that shows where the band came from, going back to our debut EP Settle The Score,” says front man Alex Bigman.

The Broken EP is the culmination of our progression and the experiences we've had as a band in the past 7 years. With the help of producer Sam Pura at the Panda Studios in Fremont California, we created an exciting new record that explores issues of friendship, relationships, and life changes. With 5 songs at a fast 10 minute length, Broken is a record for everyone who's followed us since the beginning,” explains Bigman. “We have a very eclectic taste in music and we used that dynamic when creating this EP”

With 2 previous EPs, a full length, and numerous national tours, including a spot on the entire Warped Tour last summer, Fight Fair has no plans of stopping now.

Emily's Army News

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TEEN PUNK ROCKERS EMILY’S ARMY MAKES DEBUT WITH DON’T BE A DICK JUNE 14 ON ADELINE RECORDS

PRODUCED BY BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG

Teenage pop-punk group Emily’s Army is gearing up for the release of their full-length debut, Don’t Be A Dick, due June 14 on Adeline Records. Produced by Billie Joe Armstrong, the album features heartfelt teenage anthems dealing in cautionary tales, politics and the pressures of adolescence. The record will be available digitally as well as on vinyl.

The 14-song set was recorded and mixed in four days at Oakland’s Jingletown Recordings with the help of engineer Chris Dugan. Emily’s Army counts the rich East Bay music scene and Gilman Street amongst their influences, along with classic power pop, and garage rock.

Emily’s Army consists of prolific songwriting brothers Max and Cole Becker, guitarist Travis Neumann and drummer Joey Armstrong. At the ripe age of 15, 16 and 17 years old, the Oakland-based band has already spent two years touring up and down the West Coast.

The band takes its name from Max and Cole’s 15 year-old cousin Emily, who was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis in 1998 and has suffered from the disease her entire life. In tribute, the band adopted the name Emily’s Army, which also happens to be the moniker for a fundraising organization in their cousin’s honor.

The 4th annual ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK MAYHEM FESTIVAL will also feature ROCKSTAR METAL MULISHA JUMP TEAM, the World’s Greatest Freestyle Motocross team. ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK MAYHEM FESTIVAL attendees can enjoy a plethora of festival activities, including perusing vendors, attending autograph signing sessions and a slew of other interactive activities that enhance the concert experience.  It's a 10 hour trip to heavy nirvana.

ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK MAYHEM FESTIVAL is produced by Rockstar Taste of Chaos organizer John Reese, Vans Warped Tour founder and MusiCares MAP Fund “From the Heart Award” recipient Kevin Lyman and Creative Artists Agency.  The trio has made the ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK MAYHEM FESTIVAL a standout on the summer concert circuit by following the proven model of utilizing sponsorship to deliver a lower ticket price and an enhanced concert experience. This year sees them joining forces once again with ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK as the title sponsor.

“Metal is ALIVE and WELL in 2011,” states tour producer John Reese. “Each year the tour gets bigger and better and 2011 is no exception.  This group of artists this year are going to apply a big, bad, metal shellacking for the fans across the USA and Canada.”

ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK MAYHEM FESTIVAL 2011 is a true mix of molten veterans and smoldering up-and-comers, who are bringing their A games and giving the fans nothing less of an amazing day,” adds tour producer  Kevin Lyman.

In 2008, the ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK MAYHEM FESTIVAL bulldozed onto the scene and quickly made itself known as the preeminent summer destination for the hard rock and metal community.  ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK MAYHEM FESTIVAL boasts the most powerful artist line-ups in heavy music.  Artists who have performed in ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK MAYHEM FESTIVAL’s past include hard music legends SLAYER, SLIPKNOT, MARILYN MANSON, KORN, ROB ZOMBIE, LAMB OF GOD, HATEBREED, CANNIBAL CORPSE, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE, MASTODON, FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE and many more.  All have pummeled the stage, while delivering the intensity and heaviness that fans have grown to expect year after year.
