It would be a challenge for anyone to possibly give this album a negative review. These are classic songs, performed by world class artists, all for the benefit of a wonderful charity. It really doesn't get much better than this. While there are certainly highlights, the simple fact is that it's all good, and by purchasing the album you too are benefiting The Bridge School and all the good work they do. Over the years, The Bridge School has become internationally known for their work in augmentive speech therapy.
The brilliant mix of more current artists like Fleet Foxes and Band of Horses, with surprises like Metallica intermingled on the same album with people like Paul McCartney, The Who, and Elton John would make you think that this could never work as a cohesive album, but it really does. There is a vibrancy and joy to all of the performances that bleeds through whether you are familiar with the band or not. The unique intergenerational appeal of this mix makes it a perfect opportunity for parents and children to bond over these magical performances and the unique bits of both history they represent. It would be nice to think that everyone who has only heard of Neil Young in relationship to the sample used in the Redlight King song "Old Man" would take this opportunity to open the door to a whole other era of awesome music.
The standout tracks include REM w/Neil Young performing "Country Feedback" (particularly poignant due to the recent breakup announcement), Pearl Jam performing "Better Man" (in a gorgeous, folksy arrangement), Nils Lofgren's performance of "Cry Just A Little" in tribute to Bill Graham, and most stunning of all Thom Yorke paying tribute to Neil Young with a brilliant cover of "After The Gold Rush". Live performances rarely translate well on CD, but this is one big, fat, glorious exception. BUY IT!
Release is scheduled for Oct 24th, but it is currently available for pre-order HERE.
