Black Taxi Readies Album for January 2012 Release

October 25, 2011
"If New York's music scene were summed up in two words, they would be BLACK TAXI. Kind of dirty, a little poppy, and VERY danceable, these Brooklynites fashion some of the most undeniably contagious music around." - The Deli
"Being afraid of cliche, this dirty hipster hesitates to call BLACK TAXI New York's best kept secret, but, sh*t, they just might be." - Dirty F*cking Hipster
"If The Clash and The Talking Heads were to have an offspring, it would be BLACK TAXI." - Performer Magazine

"We can't help but challenge ourselves as musicians, and I think that shows. But we're always asking the question 'Is it a good song'," muses Bill Mayo, guitarist/vocalist for Brooklyn's BLACK TAXI. With the upcoming release of their second album WE DON'T KNOW ANY BETTER on January 14, 2012, these four hyper-talented but synergistically-connected musicians haven't just challenged themselves - they've succeeded as well. "Believe it or not, it's easy to make complicated music. The real challenge is making simple songs that nobody has thought of yet."
The music of BLACK TAXI is a sound that's complex and unique yet universally instantaneous and immediate. Recalling the disjointed melodicism of Modest Mouse, the emotional catharsis of Coldplay, the animated theatricality of Franz Ferdinand and the dynamic beat-driven rock of The Strokes, BLACK TAXI goes beyond the standard line-up of drum, bass, guitar and vocals. Augmenting their instrumentals with carnival drums, glockenspiel, trumpet, keyboards and synths, these four musos bypass musical overload and craft their songwriting on the important backbone of rhythm and melody. "I'm a believer in physical embodiment of rhythm and music," Bill continues. "We dance and jump, gyrate or concentrate in stillness, inhale and exhale, just like the audience." Their much-buzzed about live shows are the perfect balance of exactly that - a give and take with the audience where the band shares the exhilaration of their live performance with everyone watching. "People who see live music like to feel something and express it. Our setlists have ups and downs like a good movie. It's a whole experience."

Recorded at Brooklyn's acclaimed Bunker Studio with producer Aaron Nevezie (The Black Keys, Danger Mouse, Ambulance LTD) at the helm, We Don't Know Any Better is an album rife with textures, sounds, and melodies - from the epic swells of "Hand", the dance stomp of "Friend", the winsome synthpop of "Tell Me What You Need", to the stunning harmonies of the gorgeous folkpop album closer "Hope I Never Know". "As our producer, Aaron brought killer ears, years of experience, and perhaps most importantly, endless ideas to our songs," explains charismatic frontman Ezra Huleatt (vocals, keys, trumpet). "He attended a number of our rehearsals before we booked our studio session and got us thinking in different ways about songs that we thought were complete. In fact, we brought three or four song skeletons to our recording session and those ended up being some of my favorite songs on the album!"
Revolving around the vocal interplay of Ezra and his equally fascinating foil Bill and firmly anchored by Krisana Soponpong (bass) and Jason Holmes (drums, vocals), BLACK TAXI was born in 2007 in Brooklyn, NY. Pulling together their vastly different musical backgrounds - Ezra studied jazz, Bill hiphop/R&B, Krisana 80s synthpop, and Jason orchestral/theater, the band combined their minds and created a style that's uniquely their own. "Our sound is informed by the different musical backgrounds we hail from," explains Ezra. "The catalyst for most of the songs I write is based on personal experience, but the finalized songs are definitely influenced by a balance of our collective skillset versus new ideas/sounds we want to try on."
"This album especially has a lot more electronic elements, which are no doubt inspired by all the electro stuff that's been going on the last decade, like LCD Soundsystem, The Knife, Passion Pit," Bill explains. "But I still listen to Nirvana and Soundgarden." These rather polar influences can be best seen in their first single, "Tightrope", a twitchy and jangly pop gem that showcases the band's artful musicality, something that they don't take for granted. "Part biographical, part talltale, 'Tightrope' works well as a song because it juxtaposes opposites; a sweet bass line with a dark melody, jittery guitar with hard, straight ahead drums," adds Ezra. "I've always had feelings of love/hate toward 'stability' and a skewed idea of what 'home,' means. 'Tightrope' sums up those relationships."
upcoming live dates
Oct 26 - Nashville, TN 12th & Porter
Oct 27 - Fort Worth, TX 8.0
Oct 28 - Dallas, TX Club Dada
Oct 29 - Austin, TX ACL Live-The Zombie Ball

Nov 18 - Albany, NY Jillian's
Nov 19 - Cambridge, MA The Middle East
Dec 10 - Brooklyn, NY Knitting Factory Brooklyn
2009's debut Things of That Nature saw the band break out of the crowded, often times faceless, NYC scene and create a whole scene unto themselves. Selling out venues like NYC's Bowery Ballroom and Mercury Lounge as well as equal-sized venues in cities like Boston and New Orleans, the band's live shows prove to be a major part of their existence. Secret Sound Shop calls the band, "a must see live act... Expect to catch front man Ezra Huleatt daintily darting around the stage (like a gymnast on acid) or pounding enthusiastically on his drum to the chirpy riffs of guitarist Bill Mayo, the funky bass lines of Krisana Soponpong and the precise driving rhythms of Jason Holmes." Joonbug enthuses, "BLACK TAXI are the party. Take one curly-haired, vibrant dance-aholic, a technical guitar genius, an endearingly superb bassist, and a rhythmic God, Chris Martin look-alike drummer, and there you have it. One hell of a party."
"It's hard to say what we actually sound like. Some say they hear The Clash in our music, some say Radiohead, some say Talking Heads," Bill explains of their hard to pin-down sound. "Bands just want their music heard by lots of people. As long as each record is better than the last, I'm happy. If we stop progressing, I'll be wicked annoyed. The quantifiable "success" of an album, like if people enjoy it or we make a couple of bucks, is out of our control. You have to measure your accomplishments against your own artistic goals, not by accolades."
BLACK TAXI is Ezra Huleatt (vocals/keys/trumpet), Bill Mayo (guitar/vocals), Krisana Soponpong (bass), and Jason Holmes (drums/vocals). We Don't Know Any Better was produced by Aaron Nevezie (The Black Keys, Danger Mouse) and will be released on January 14, 2012.

"When You're Through Thinking, Say Yes is a record that sees its creators rediscovering their mojo, and embracing the kind of seemingly effortless songwriting qualities that made them so popular in the first place." - Kerrang!

It's nice to see Yellowcard back on top of their game... Lucky album No. 7 is their best effort in years!" - The Daily News

Says YES Again... This Time - Unplugged
Releasing Acoustic Version of Latest Album on MONDAY!

"Sing for Me Video" Debuts On MTV Networks on Tuesday

2011 has been a banner year for Hopeless recording artists YELLOWCARD. Not only did they release their latest album WHEN YOU'RE THROUGH THINKING, SAY YES to critical acclaim and to the wide-open arms of fans both new and old, but they also released their back catalogue on vinyl and toured the world, seeing countries and fans they've never seen in-person before.
As a perfect cap to end the year and as a major "thank you" to their fans, they're re-releasing their WYTTSY - this time in acoustic form. It's a testament to the band's songwriting prowess that the unplugged version of this album takes the music to a whole new level while keeping the main spirit and soul of the songs intact. It will be released digitally via iTunes and on Monday, October 24, 2011, while the physical release date will be November 1, 2011 and exclusively available only at indie retailers.
To help herald its release, will begin streaming the album in its entirety beginning tonight prior to its release here: In addition, MTV Networks will be debuting the video for "Sing For Me" (electric version from the original album) on Tuesday, October 25th on MTV, MTV2, mtvU and
The band issued the following statement regarding the release of the acoustic album:
Over the course of our career, Yellowcard has always taken pride and enjoyment in performing our songs in an acoustic setting whenever possible. Last year when we finished recording When You're Through Thinking, Say Yes, we decided to record a few of the songs to be used as b-sides here and there. Shortly after the release we noticed the incredible response that the acoustic version of "Sing For Me" was getting online. We thought, "What if we recorded all the songs this way and tried to get Hopeless Records to release it as an acoustic version of the entire record?" Lucky for us, they seemed to think that was a great idea.

We began using every free day or night we had in early 2011 to finish recording all ten songs acoustically. One of the things we are most proud of is that we produced and mixed this entire record on our own. (Much credit is due to Ryan Mendez for his sleepless nights behind the computer.) This is something the band has wanted to do for a very long time and we have been so looking forward to surprising all of our fans with this record. It is the least we can do for the amazing support they have given us as we try to rebuild this career that we love so much.
So here it is, When You're Through Thinking, Say Yes (Acoustic). It has been a hard secret to keep these last few months but we are confident that our fans will keep this album close to their hearts. It is both a huge accomplishment for us as a band and a massive thank you to all of the people who continue to stand behind this band. We hope you love it.
- Ryan, Sean, Longineu, Ryan, and Sean
Yellowcard's seventh studio album When You're Through Thinking, Say Yes was released in March on Hopeless Records to unanimous acclaim and high chart positions worldwide, including #9 Alternative in Canada, #6 Alternative in Australia, #1 Indie Album Breakers in the UK and #19 on Billboard's Top 200 Albums in the U.S. The band is currently in the midst of their U.S. tour (dates below).

"Dear Jack" is Featured on HULU

Currently featured on Hulu, "Dear Jack" is the heart-wrenching, yet ultimately triumphant tale of of musician Andrew McMahon's battle with leukemia. Released in 2009, this documentary grew in part from the coincidental action of his record label giving him a video camera with which to document the recording process of the first Jack's Mannequin album. That same video camera came into a somewhat cathartic use as he began to document his treatment process in 2005 when he was diagnosed with leukemia.

While this is a documentary that everyone quite happily knows the outcome of (since Andrew is in remission and on tour currently), it does not in any way detract from the powerfully emotional rawness with which this film documents both the tragedy and triumph of what this man has had to go through to come out on top and beat this evil disease. Andrew also started a charity who shares its name with this film, the Dear Jack Foundation which works to raise funds towards the battle against cancer among the young adult population.

So grab a cup of tea and a box of tissues and settle in for the ride.

KAURA Track On KROQ Compilation

For Immediate Release
October 20th, 2011

Los Angeles, CA’s KROQ to Include KAURA’s Track ‘If This Were To End’ in New “Locals Only” Mercedes Compilation

California natives KAURA are pleased to announce that major Los Angeles rock station KROQ, in partnership with Mercedes, will be including KAURA’s track ‘If This Were to End’ on the new “Locals Only” compilation in the form of a custom memory stick. KAURA is one of 20 bands that were chosen to be included and will be supported through on air promotional spots featuring the selected artists. The band will also be highlighted on the contest page where fans will get the chance to win the compilation.

‘If This Were to End’ is cut from the band’s new album, That Which Defines Us, which was released on September 20th, 2011. Produced by singer Malcolm Guess, That Which Defines Us is a testament of dedication, taking over two years to record with the assistance of rock luminaries such as Sylvia Massey (Tool, System of a Down, Danzig), Ken Andrews (Failure, A Perfect Circle) and Michael Romanowski (Dredg).  Central to the album’s sound were instruments that the band collected on their travels to India, Thailand, Bali, Cambodia, Laos, and Nepal.

KAURA (pronounced kay-aura) were born from the vision of infusing the aggressive power of hard, melodic rock with the haunting and ethereal sounds of ancient instruments.  “We were really drawn to the sounds of these instruments because they are not traditionally heard in modern rock music,” explains guitarist Ben Rojas. Drummer  Benjamin Jones adds, “We have always strived to create our own unique voice and incorporating these instruments helps us do that and create a really expansive depth of sound.”

Five Finger Death Punch "Occupy" The Top of the Charts

For Immediate Release
October 19th, 2011

New Album ‘American Capitalist’ Debuts at #3 on the Billboard Top 200

FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH’s new album, American Capitalist, has charted at #3 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, topping new debuts from artists such as Lauren Alaina, Ryan Adams, Martina McBride, Joe Jonas, and more.  The album sold a staggering 90,509 copies in its first week, making it the band’s strongest debut yet.  American Capitalist is an impressive continuance of the band’s success, building upon the already concrete triumph of their last two albums, both of which are RIAA Certified Gold.  American Capitalist also charted at #1 on the Independent Current Albums chart, #3 on the Top Current Albums chart, #2 on the Top Current Rock Albums chart, Current Hard Music Albums chart, Top Hard Music Albums chart, and the Overall Digital Albums chart.  The album also charted at #4 on the Physical Albums chart.

More impressively, American Capitalist is a completely independent release with no major label backing, making a #3 charting position a genuinely amazing achievement.  Prospect Park is a new independent production and management company founded by Jeff Kwatinetz.  Kwatinetz is known for starting former management powerhouse, The Firm, a company once known for managing chart-topping artists such as Kelly Clarkson, Linkin Park, and Snoop Dogg.  Prospect Park’s music division has a stellar track record of tremendous success with acts that not only include 5FDP, but Jane’s Addiction, Ice Cube and Korn, just to name a few.  Prospect Park’s project spectrum is leading them into the world of television in January; the company plans to kick off an internet-based online network beginning with the airing of soap operas, including the classics ‘One Life to Live’ and ‘All My Children’.

Deb Klein, the GM for Prospect Park Label states, “This is our first number 1 on the Billboard chart and it's an incredible testament to the partnership we have with the band and EMI label services. By being independent we are able to take chances and do things quickly and efficiently in this digital age.”

Maria Ferrero, President and CEO of Adrenaline PR adds,“ These days, it makes a  statement for any band to sell more than 90,000 in its first week, but it is a phenomenon for a Heavy Metal band on an independent label to scan more than 90,000 records.”

American Capitalist is now available for purchase everywhere music is sold: Best Buy, Amazon, Newbury Comics, iTunes (Deluxe, Explicit or Edited) and many more.  5FDP just kicked off their headlining Fall trek- the SHARE THE WELT TOUR with All That Remains, Hatebreed, and Rains as support.  Tickets are still on sale to the general public and VIP packages are available at and now.  All currently booked dates are now available, so see below for all current tour dates.

BERGEN COUNTY , NJ Riding on the crest of critical acclaim, New Jersey indiepop duo THE FRONT BOTTOMS is gearing up for a string regional dates that kicks off this weekend at NYC's Highline Ballroom on October 22nd as part of CMJ New Music Festival, supporting Kevin Devine and An Horse. Circling out to the Midwest and boomeranging back to their home state of New Jersey, they will be playing the FREE pre-party for The Flaming Lips on October 27th in Norfolk, VA before wrapping up the tour supporting River City Extension's Annual Thanksgiving Show at Asbury Park's Stone Pony on November 23rd. Their new video for “Flashlight” from their self-titled Bar/None Records debut premieres exclusively this week at AOL’s SPINNER and can be seen here:
The Front Bottoms have been garnering plenty of media attention, focusing not only on their uniquely poignant and surrealistically mundane lyrics but also on their melodically complex acoustic indiepop. All Music Guide lauded, “The Front Bottoms is an out-of-left-field candidate for the best debut album of 2011." The Aquarian Weekly voted the album “Disc of the Week,” comparing them to “an indie pop sound similar to that of Piebald with the vocal styling of Say Anything.” DRUM Magazine called it “a promising debut boasting the inspired goofiness of a latter-day Jonathan Richman.” Among other early believers include Alternative Press, Beyond Race Magazine, The Star-Ledger, Sputnik Music, and Jersey Beat.

Their singles "Maps" and "The Beers" have been picking up steam on specialty radio with over 30 adds in just six weeks, including spins from KROQ in Los Angeles, WRFF Radio 104.5 in Philadelphia, Chicago's WXRT, and the band's first ever commercial in-studio performance at WROX in Norfolk. They also debuted on FMQB SubModern albums and singles chart.
Emerging from Northern Jersey suburbia better known for its malls than its music, singer/guitarist Brian Sella and drummer/bullhornist Mathew Uychich’s meteoric rise sparked from Bergen County’s DIY concert circuit that has included everything from punk flop houses, VFW halls, and fire stations. Fueled by strong performances at Bamboozle and shows opening for Vanessa Carlton, He Is We, Bayside's Anthony Raneri, and Jersey cohorts Titus Andronicus to mention a few, the band continues to build its fanbase while remaining true to their humble Jersey roots (Matt and Brian still have their jobs doing landscaping and working at a grocery store respectively).
Their self-titled debut was released on September 6th via Bar/None Records. You can catch them on tour this Fall at one of the below dates.
The Front Bottoms is Brian Sella (vocals/guitars) and Matt Uychich (drums). Their debut album The Front Bottoms will be released late summer on Bar/None Records.
