Lady Gaga: Born This Way

I will be the first to admit I am not on the Lady Gaga train. I don't get the appeal. The clothing and the stunts are exceedingly tiresome and the music has been average dance pop at best. What is most striking is the turn she has taken to blatantly ripping off Madonna. I thought that this was a one off rather than a trend when I saw the "Alejandro" video, but now, with the release of  the new single "Born This Way" that is an odd mash-up of "Vogue" and "Express Yourself" it has just become a bizarre sideshow. At this rate she might as well just do covers of the actual songs. I know that this is being widely excused in the press because they say her fan base is too young to know the originals, but really? So if someone wanted to come along and blatantly rip off The Beatles it would be okay because their fans are too young to know the originals? (and for all of you ready to jump on me for comparing Madonna and The Beatles, feel free to substitute any cultural icon that significantly changed music in a unique way). Counting on musical ignorance seems an odd way to justify ripping off the work of other people. All I can say is I really hope Madonna is getting a cut of this action. With all of the lawsuits that went flying around when people started using samples and making mash-ups, over rights and payments there has got to be plenty of precedence to make sure "The Material Girl" gets her due.
