Adept: Death Dealers

The first track from the new album by Swedish post hardcore darlings Adept did not impress me at all. In fact, I wanted to avoid having to listen to the rest of the record based on that song. Well luckily, that song is not at all indicative of the rest of the record. From the second track on, Death Dealers picks up speed and moves you along through a series of super heavy and powerful tracks that meld both clean and screamed vocals into a seamless mesh of seething rage. It’s easy to see from this album why they’ve been tapped to open for A Day to Remember and Bring Me The Horizon. They exude a certain power that is certain to translate into excellent live shows.

Death Dealers has an excellent pedigree having been recorded at Studio Fredman
(In Flames, Bring Me The Horizon) in the fall of last year under the guidance of Fredrik Nordstrom and Henrik Udd. Adept is a super young band (averaging 23) who already have a decent body of work under their belts. While they are not yet that well known in the US this new release may just change that.

Best line: “You said you would die for me, so what are you waiting for?”

For Fans of: Bring Me The Horizon, A Day to Remember, Bullet For My Valentine

Best tracks: “I’m A Failure, You’re A Tragedy”
                    “From The Depths of Hell”

Scheduled for release on March 2nd worldwide, to be released in US on Amazon for download March 1st.

These Magnificent Miles: On the Long Road with Red Wanting Blue

Red Wanting Blue are a band I came across in a most unusual way. I had heard that Broadway producer Ken Davenport was working on a project with the band, which peaked my interest. Ken is a really interesting guy who has worked on some really great projects so I was automatically in, In the intervening time I checked out the wide range of excellent live performance videos of the band on YouTube. Red Wanting Blue is an excellent, very rootsy rock band out of Ohio that have been plugging away as an unsigned band for many years now with only limited recognition. Well that may all be poised to change with the release of These Magnificent Miles: On the Long Road with Red Wanting Blue the documentary that Ken produced about the band. He tells an an entertaining story of how he got drug into seeing the band for the first time six years ago on his blog. While my copy of the film has not yet arrived, and is therefore not going to be reviewed here yet, I feel completely confident in urging you to order it. It's going to be great. I just know it.

Go Radio: Lucky Street

Tuesday the first of March is release day for not one but three (Go Radio/Eisley/Dropkick Murphys) really great new albums. Tallahassee, Fl based Go Radio are finally releasing their first full length this week, Lucky Street, on Fearless records. Go Radio consists of Jason Lancaster on lead vocals and guitar, Alex Reed on guitar and vocals, Matt Poulos on bass, and Steven Kopacz on drums. Jason Lancaster’s vocals and songwriting skills are likely to remind you a lot of another band out of Florida, Mayday Parade, because that was his previous gig.

Lucky Street is expounds and develops upon the sound and style that Jason began developing back in his Mayday Parade days. While the early tracks on the album seem to suffer a wee bit under the weight of overproduction, the album, as a whole, is really good. Intriguingly, the best tracks on the album are saved for the back half, a unique and sometimes dangerous move. Labels traditionally try and frontload albums with the best material, a prime reason singles tend to be gleaned from the first few tracks on the album. By not doing so in this case, it seems to indicate the belief of both the band and the label in the overall integrity of the album as a whole. The true draw of this band is the uniqueness of Lancaster’s voice and the beautiful songwriting which are highlighted most clearly on the last few songs on the album.

Fearless made a smart move by signing them early last year. It was certainly no secret that Lancaster’s songwriting would be an eminently marketable product. Nobody else writes such beautifully literate songs. As far as the highlights of Lucky Street goes, “Hold On” and “House of Hallways” shines when they strip back the production. “Redemption in the Verse” and “The Truth Is” both echo the general style of the work Lancaster wrote for Mayday Parade. Two versions of “Forever My Father” appear on the album the second of which enlists the Lancaster siblings, Erin and Daniel, in addition to Jason, performing this touching tribute to their father. Go Radio have already shared stages with all manner of scene notables including A Day to Remember, Mayday Parade, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and are scheduled to play Warped Tour this summer. Lucky Street is currently streaming in its entirety on the Go Radio Myspace page in advance of the release on Tuesday.

Drive A

Inaugural Bill Includes Drive A, Hollywood Undead, 10 Years, New Medicine
New York, NY - February 24, 2011- Sometimes a chance meeting is more than it seems – in the case of DRIVE A, a random moment ignited a fuse resulting in an incendiary new band. Songs about rebellion, lethal guitars and killer hooks have their foundation in old school punk and rock n’ roll that the band reveres but their stage presence and delivery puts them firmly in the now.  With a fan following that is expanding exponentially, it’s clear that the band is onto something. DRIVE A come roaring into 2011 with their brand new album, The World in Shambles, out on Dead Conflict Records and a support slot on the House of Blues Revolt Tour 2011 with Hollywood Undead, 10 Years and New Medicine. The tour kicks off April 6th in Boston and runs through May 27th, covering the United States.
"We are excited to be a part of the inaugural run of the REVOLT! Tour," says frontman Bruno Mascolo. “We look forward to sharing the stage with Hollywood Undead, 10 Years, and New Medicine. It’s going to be a great tour.” DRIVE A are celebrating the tour and new album by offering a free download of “Revolt!” from The World In Shambles.  Fans can purchase tickets, get the free download and view the video for “Revolt!” here:
The World in Shambles is the follow up to their debut album Loss of Desire (2009). The critically acclaimed album which featured singles “Are You Blind” and “Can’t Sleep It Off” set the precedent for DRIVE A’s form of high energy rock n’ roll and provided the soundtrack for their energetic live show.  Mascolo explains “although we’re still proud of Loss of Desire, we feel we’ve come a long way as musicians and songwriters, you can hear that we’ve played about 200 shows since our last record.” The band freely admits that their singular mission upon entering the studio was to craft an album that bottled their firecracker live energy and onstage prowess. They collectively rejected polished, computerized techniques and technologies in favor of beautiful, genuine imperfections, all of which serve to make The World in Shambles that much more authentic.
The California quartet formed after singer/guitarist Bruno Mascolo and guitarist Jason Nott ran into each other one night outside of Hollywood's Troubadour in 2006. After realizing they both possessed the drive and passion to start their own band, they recruited drummer Cody Root via a mutual friend. Bassist Taylor Knowles joined the band after seeing them open for Set Your Goals in Orlando. He became a fan based on their live performance and when the bass player position opened, he got in touch through the wonders of social networking and secured his slot in the rhythm section.
DRIVE A has steadily built a following of fans by touring with the likes of Alkaline Trio, The Used, Atreyu, Bullet For My Valentine and Escape the Fate over the past two years. It's the band's onstage power that has attracted an alliance of kids that continue to multiply with every tour. Nott summed up the band's relationship with their fans and the crowds, saying, "We're a breath of fresh air for them. We're only a couple years older than the kids listening and they can relate."
A switchblade to the soft, white underbelly of today's watered-down state of music, DRIVE A are pure, raw energy--on stage and in the studio--which is, after all, what Rock 'N' Roll has always been about. The release of their sophomore album and the House of Blues Revolt Tour 2011 are a match made in heaven.  “Touring is the life’s blood of this band,” says Bruno. “Recording and everything else is cool, but we are a live band and that is the best way to experience DRIVE A.”

Ian Axel

In randomly flipping through Spin last night I came across mention of Ian Axel in a list of bands being touted by modern rock radio programmers. While normally this might not incite further research, I was fascinated by the fact that I really liked other bands on the list, but had never heard of him. So, a bit of internet surfing later, I discovered I really like him too. Charming piano rock with vocals evoking a playful innocence, this album is worth buying based on the title song, "This Is The New Year" alone. While it is apparently featured on one of those loathesome MTV reality shows, I would never hold that against him. In this day and age, any placement is good placement. With the charming accessibility of the music, it is likely a lot more placement in tv and movies is eminent, which is a crucial resource for musicians trying to make a living today. In that spirit of helping talented people make a living don't just buy the one song, embrace the entire record. It's only $7.99 right now. You can't even get one movie ticket for that.

The Belle Brigade: Album Review

The Belle Brigade is an LA based band fronted by brother/sister duo Ethan and Barbara Gruska. Their self-titled debut album, The Belle Brigade, is set to come out April 19th and features shimmering harmonies quite reminiscent of what is often referred to as the ‘California sound’, that folky, hipster sound that reminds people of California in the 70’s. The Gruskas really excel at that sort of anticipatory phrasing and vocal blending that only siblings can achieve, and results in harmonies that are almost too beautiful to sing along with.

Their debut album has beautiful sequencing designed to show how varied and charming the material is. While nothing about this album really screams commerciality, which strikes fear in the hearts of label execs to be sure, what does scream out is an intense musicality and joyfulness that is very exciting to listen to. The world has proven itself ready to embrace this type of Americana influenced album with the recent huge success of The King is Dead from The Decemberists, already an early contender for best of 2011 lists.

There is a very fine line between influence and imitation. While many young bands suffer from the latter, The Belle Brigade quite happily exudes the former. The Gruskas are obviously people from an impressively musical family, know musical history, grew up listening to a wide range of music, careful digested it all, and created their own unique sound. Their sound is a breath of fresh air, and while you can clearly hear tones reminiscent of their influences, like Fleetwood Mac, their sound is firmly and uniquely their own.

Barbara, though best known as a drummer, succeeds extremely well in stepping to the front and taking control of the spotlight.  With Matthew Wilder at the helm of the album, who among many other things, helped LA band No Doubt go from local darlings to international stars with Tragic Kingdom, The Belle Brigade are all too ready to break out of their So Cal shell and face the world head-on.

Standout tracks:

Track 1 “Sweet Louise” Incredibly, charming and rootsy, will cause you to tap your toe involuntarily.

Track 3 “Loser” The anthemic ode to loserdom pulses with an old school Crosby, Stills and Nash kind of vibe.

Track 4 “Belt of Orion” Could have easily been a lost Indigo Girls song, and that’s a good thing.

Track 10 “My Goodness” has positively gorgeous vocals.

Who the hell is Arcade Fire?

Just when I had given up on The Grammy’s as being horribly out of touch one moment and pandering to pop culture the next they turn around and surprise me by naming Arcade Fire as “Album of the Year” winners. Did I think it was the best album of the year? Nope, didn’t even make my top ten. Why then am I pleased? Because it was a good album, but more importantly it was a bold choice. Nobody had given Arcade Fire a shot in hell of winning that award, myself included, and while it was certainly the best album out of those nominated, Arcade Fire do not have the widespread name recognition that the other nominees did. While I don’t particularly care about awards in and of themselves, they do perform a very important function in  the life of a musician: they let more people know who you are, as evidenced by the bevy of people wandering around this week going, “Who the hell is Arcade Fire?”. This will, hopefully, translate into a huge jump in album sales for the band, and deservedly so. They beat out two of the biggest pop sensations of recent years, a hugely respected country act, and Eminem. It seems as though somebody behind the scenes in the Grammy organization has finally figured out that it was quickly becoming a dreadfully irrelevant award and figured out a way to shake things up a bit this year. So props to you Grammy voters, thanks for making this year interesting for a change.

Hot Topic Take Action Tour Announcement

February 14, 2011

Hot Topic presents the 2011 Take Action Tour
Celebrating Its 10th Anniversary of Raising Funds and Awareness for Non-Profit Organizations

Line-up Announced: Co-Headliners Silverstein and Bayside
With Polar Bear Club, The Swellers and Texas in July

Proceeds of Tour to Benefit Sex, Etc. for Teen Sexuality Education

Pre-sale tickets go on sale today at:

February 14, 2011 – Celebrating its tenth anniversary of raising funds and awareness to assorted non-profit organizations, Sub City (Hopeless Records’ non-profit organization which has raised more than two million dollars for charity), is pleased to announce the 2011 edition of TAKE ACTION TOUR. This year’s much-lauded beneficiary is SEX, ETC., the Teen-to-Teen Sexuality Education Project of Answer, a national organization dedicated to providing and promoting comprehensive sexuality education to young people and the adults who teach them. “Sex is a hot topic amongst Take Action bands and fans but rarely communicated in a honest and accurate way,” says Louis Posen, Hopeless Records president. “Either don't do it or do it right!"
Presented by Hot Topic, the tour will feature celebrated indie rock co-headliners SILVERSTEIN and BAYSIDE, along with POLAR BEAR CLUB, THE SWELLERS and TEXAS IN JULY. Kicking off at Boston’s Paradise Rock Club on April 22nd, the annual nationwide charity tour will circle the US, presenting the best bands in music today while raising funds and awareness for Sex, Etc. and the concept that we can all play a part in making a positive impact in the world. Ten percent of the cost of each ticket sold is donated to Sex, Etc. and Sub City 501c3 non-profits. Pre-sale tickets go on sale today at:
“Growing up, every local show we played was a charity show,” says Silverstein vocalist Shane Told. “It was an important part of the scene that we were doing what we loved and more importantly helping others. To step back into that and work with our label to give back, it feels really great. We were a part of Take Action Tour in 2006, and when we had the opportunity to co-headline the tour this year, we jumped at the chance. We couldn't be more proud to be leading the charge this year with our best friends, Bayside."
Echoes Bayside bassist Nicholas Ghanbarian, “We’re really excited to be part of Take Action Tour because we’ve never been on a tour where part of the proceeds is going to charity which is great. We’re also super excited to be heading out on the road with some friends that we haven’t played with in years!”
“We were honored to have been contacted by Take Action Tour’s record label, Hopeless Records, which was looking for a nonprofit organization to be a part of the 2011 tour,” explains Answer’s Executive Director Elizabeth Schroeder, Ed. D, M.S.W. “It’s amazing that both the company and the artists they represent have been willing over the years to help educate young people about what organizations around the country are doing to serve others. We’re very grateful that Answer has been chosen to be a part of this year’s tour.”
As the teen-focused program of Answer, the award-winning national organization based at NJ’s Rutgers University, Sex, Etc.’s mission is to improve teen sexual health information and resources across the country. “Our organization’s tag line, ‘Sex Ed, Honestly,’ reflects our core belief that young people have the right to receive honest, accurate and age-appropriate information about the entire range of topics related to sexuality,” she continues. “For 30 years, we have reached millions of young people, community and school professionals, and parents throughout the United States.”
With an active online community ( and a national magazine of the same name, Sex, Etc. serves as a resource and destination for teens seeking advice and healthy communication on questions about sex, relationships, pregnancy, STDs, contraception, sexual orientation, and more.
Presenting sponsor Hot Topic has worked with Take Action Tour since the tour's inception in 1999 and their commitment to helping make a positive impact continues to be as strong in 2011 as it has ever been. The music lifestyle mall retailer ( is a natural fit as a presenter, because they demonstrate a passion for music in everything they do. Expect to see the bands from the tour making several special appearances at local Hot Topic locations throughout the tour. Also generously supporting the 2011 tour are Alternative Press, LifeStyles Condoms, Hopeless Records, Wind-up Records, Bridge Nine Records, Fueled By Ramen and Equal Vision Records.
Burlington, ON’s Silverstein formed in 2000. This creative and busy decade has seen them perform over 1,200 live shows while making countless friends as they’ve sold over 1,000,000 albums. The hard rock quintet recently finished up their successful US and Canadian Winterizer tour and are preparing for the release of their highly anticipated, fifth studio album, Rescue, due out April 26, 2011. The forthcoming debut Hopeless Records full length is already gaining momentum with a spot on Alternative Press’ Most Anticipated Albums of 2011.
Bayside formed in 2000 in Queens, NY. Since debuting ten years ago, the band has released four full length studio albums, three of which debuted on Billboard’s Top 200 chart, and have sold over 300,000 records in the U.S. alone. Bayside has had huge success on the road, playing over 2,000 shows all over the world. Their touring success has led to a devoted, almost cult-like, fan base which is where their “Bayside is a Cult” slogan stems from. Wind-up Records will be releasing the band’s fifth studio recording, and debut for the label, Killing Time, on February 22, 2011. The 10-track album was produced by the legendary Gil Norton who has worked with an amazing group of artists including Foo Fighters, The Distillers, Jimmy Eat World and The Pixies. The album was included in Alternative Press’ Most Anticipated Albums of 2011 and received four stars from the magazine. Spin gave the album an 8 out of 10, while Maxim raved, “Take one part Weezer tunefulness and one part Nirvana aggression, add a dash of Green Day’s ambition, then shake, serve, rock out.”
The last few years have been exciting ones for Polar Bear Club. 2009 saw the release of their landmark album Chasing Hamburg which was named one of Alternative Press' Most Anticipated Albums of the year and absolutely lived up to the acclaim. The band went on to tour the world several times over, sharing the stage with the likes of The Gaslight Anthem, Strike Anywhere, Every Time I Die and more, closing out 2010 on the Alternative Press Tour with Bring Me The Horizon. Fast forward to 2011 and Polar Bear Club will kick off the year by recording their yet-to-be-titled third full-length (second for Bridge Nine Records) with Brian McTernan and will debut new songs from the album on Take Action Tour
The Swellers have proven themselves to be an aggressive and hard-working live act. The group’s Fueled By Ramen debut, Ups And Downsizing, was named one of the best albums of 2009 by both AbsolutePunk and Punknews. The Flint, MI-based punk rock group has been on the road nearly non-stop over the last four years, gaining fans and support from other bands with their reactive music and tireless work ethic. Since then, the band has toured with the likes of Less Than Jake, Paramore, Motion City Soundtrack, H2O, and Four Year Strong, not to mention festivals including Warped Tour and the Give It A Name and Groezrock festivals in Europe. The Swellers will return to the studio later this month to record their follow-up to Ups And Downsizing.
As soon as the two youngest members walked across the graduation stage this past year, Texas in July charged headfirst into living out their dreams full time, starting with a European headlining tour and numerous tours throughout the US and Canada. Just after completing the Motel 6 Rock Yourself To Sleep Tour with We Came As Romans, For Today, The Word Alive and Woe Is Me, Texas In July will now join Bayside and Silverstein on the 2011 Take Action Tour. The Ephrata, PA-based band has also previously shared the stage with everyone from The Devil Wears Prada and Every Time I Die to August Burns Red and Maylene and the Sons of Disaster. They will release their new album, which was recorded in Hadley, MA with producer Zeuss (Hatebreed, Shadows Fall), in Spring 2011 on Equal Vision Records.
Comprised of the brightest up-and-coming bands, Take Action Tour has hosted We The Kings, Mayday Parade, There For Tomorrow, The Plain White T's, All Time Low, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Paramore, Every Time I Die, Jimmy Eat World, Avenged Sevenfold, Hawthorne Heights, Chiodos, Thrice, Anti-Flag, Silverstein, Dillinger Escape Plan, and many more.
