I Am Lovedrug

At the risk of repeating myself (as I have already pleaded for your participation in an earlier post), I have chosen this final day of 2010 to again ask that all of you reading this please check out IAMLOVEDRUG.COM. To briefly sum it up, indie band Lovedrug are, with the help of Pledgemusic, trying to raise funds for the production of their new album. This site is very similar to Kickstarter, in that you post a creative project and set a fundraising goal, and if you do not meet your goal then the project fails and you do not receive any of the pledged funds. With only 18 days to go, the guys have raised 298 pledges but are only 40% of the way to their goal which means the time is NOW to lend your support. In exchange for your monetary pledge, which starts as low as $15, you will receive a digital copy of the new album before it is released, instant download of two bonus tracks, and access to all the pledge updates. Pledge more and you not only get all that, but other mega-cool rewards like postcards from the road, to request the band record and send you a cover song of your choice with a dedication to you, an original Michael Shepard painting inspired by a Lovedrug song, and a wide variety of other options based on various donation amounts. For $5,000 you can even secure the 5 Year Vinyl Release Rights if you've ever had the urge to start your own label.

Check the band out on their exclusive Youtube channel HERE and pledge your allegiance and MONEY on

You are the fans.
You are now the label.

Dream Sequence

In doing some end of the year re-organization I came across these gorgeous shots of Anaheim-based electro/synth rock band Dream Sequence at Chain Reaction back in 2007. The band recently played Chain Reaction again, this time opening for Jeffree Starr earlier this month.

Spend New Years Day with Black Veil Brides

1/1/11 is the date and The Whisky in West Hollywood is the place....the place, that is, for filming of the first ever Black Veil Brides live DVD. Live is definitely how you want to get to know this band who made an excellent showing at Epicenter 2010 in Fontana this year. Powerful, dynamic, and lots of fun would be the best ways to describe the BVB live experience. Frontman Andy Six and the rest of the Brides can look forward to what will no doubt be their best year ever, with a UK tour the first half of February, followed up by the Alternative Press Tour of the US in March, following up on their inclusion in AP's Most Anticipated Albums of 2011. Please come out in support.

Tickets for the 1/1/11 show are available via ticketweb.

The $5 sale - Is it wrong to love a website?

While I remain a huge proponent of buying physical copies of Cd's, I cannot help but express my love and admiration for the music departments $5 sale going on now. Sometimes we need the convenience of downloadable music, and sometimes we just need to take advantage of great sales to expand our personal libraries. Well, this is one of those times. While there is a wide variety of music on sale, the most attention grabbing aspect is the fact that three of the records on our 10 BEST/FAVORITES OF 2010 (Bad Books, The Limousines, Local Natives) are included on the sale as well as a wide array of the almost but not quite on the list entries like Two Door Cinema Club's Tourist History. So shop, shop, shop, and be sure to come back and post what you bought and loved in the comments.

Favorite/Best Albums of 2010

We here at Blind Carrot Magazine are extremely torn between calling this list our Favorite Albums of 2010 or the Best Albums of 2010. Like many art forms, it is tough to really call any one album "better" than another. This years list is culled from a very wide variety of bands from the well known to the obscure. What they all have in common is that their releases of 2010 made a particular impression on us, enough so that when we sat down to create this list they seemed to be the obvious choices. While a few of these discs will likely be found on other publications end of year lists (The National, Local Natives, The Gaslight Anthem), we can pretty much guarantee we are one of only two publications that are choosing to honor some of the others (The Limousines, Middle Class Rut, Ryan Star). We also honor one greatest hits compilation this year, Something Corporate's Played In Space. While its generally considered forbidden to place greatest hits compilations on " Best of" lists at the end of the year we came to the firm conclusion that WE DON'T CARE. This was an amazing album, and for many people an introduction to Something Corporate since they had been on an extended hiatus.

So here is our Favorites/Best of 2010 and we ask only one thing.......please buy at least one album off this list. Music cannot survive if people do not buy it.

The Gaslight Anthem - American Slang
Middle Class Rut - No Name No Color
Bad Books - Bad Books
Jimmy Eat World - Invented
Ryan Star - 11:59
The National - High Violet
The Limousines - Get Sharp
New Politics - New Politics
Something Corporate - Played In Space
Local Native - Gorilla Manor

Epic Video From National Product

This video is really old yet totally epic, and was re-sent to me today by one of their good friends, so I thought I would share. Enjoy!  (be sure to keep an eye on Rob in the background). If you happen to be unfamiliar with this band, they put out an excellent CD in 2007 called Luna which is still available in both disc and MP3 form on Amazon. This disc contains what is quite possibly one of the most romantic rock songs ever recorded, Love Me, along with a plethora of other great tracks that make it well worth buying the whole record (not to mention the fact that I used plethora in a sentence which makes it even more worth buying).

Spin Backstage Pass with Matt & Kim

I need 4 minutes and 40 seconds of your time. Follow THIS LINK to the SPIN site and watch the Backstage Pass with Matt & Kim video. For every view between 12/21/10 and 1/20/11 ZYNC from American Express will donate $1 to some really cool charities (Green Chimneys, Sasha Bruce Youthwork & NAHECY) that work with homeless youth issues. You don't have to provide any information, or sign up for anything. Just click and watch. That simple. At last check it had only reached 4198 views, so I entreat you to go check it out and tell all your friends to check it out too. It doesn't matter if you do or don't like Matt & Kim (though it's great if you do like them). Either way, you are supporting a great cause in the easiest way possible. Thanks for your support.

Bad Books to Play Troubadour January 15th

This just in....BAD BOOKS AT THE TROUBADOUR JANUARY 15th. This is one of only two shows announced and the only one in So Cal. If you are as yet unfamiliar with Bad Books, to make a long story short Kevin Devine and Andy Hull (Manchester Orchestra) each wrote half the record and perform with the support of the rest of the members of Manchester Orchestra. Together they produced one of the most outstanding records of 2010, so this is a show you must catch because you may not get another opportunity any time soon.

The record is currently available in MP3 form on Amazon for only $5.00 so if you haven't picked it up yet follow this link to check it out and buy it.

Eve 6 "Bad News" Demo

Hey there all you Eve 6 fans, roughly six minutes ago Eve 6 posted a demo of a new song "Bad News" as an early Christmas gift for everyone who has been chomping at the bit for new material. Keep in mind this is just a demo and not a finished version so it will sound even more impressive when they are done with it...but it's already pretty amazing, and I for one, cannot wait to see what else they have up their sleeve. So follow the LINK to their Myspace blog which then gives you the link to download the song.

Middle Class Rut Make the Cut

The third entry to be revealed on the 10 Favorite Albums of 2010 is No Name No Color by Middle Class Rut. While distribution wasn't great, making it hard to find in stores, this was a gem of 2010 that cannot be ignored.

I Am Medic and Christopher Lee

I Am Medic features familiar names to the LA alternative scene, Enik Lin (The Burning Tree Project) and Sean Stopnik (Rock Kills Kid) working   a pop/electronica/dance hybrid on The Tale of Abigale Withers. While this was not at all what I was expecting when I heard this was Enik’s new project, and was initially put off by it (not being a huge fan of dance music), I have to admit this record really grows on you. While it is likely to find success much easier and quicker in the European and Japanese markets who have a less negative viewpoint of dance music, this is definitely a project worth checking out. Unlike a lot of dance music today, these songs have a well-crafted underlying structure that makes you feel like they could be stripped down from all the bells and whistles that turn them into dance music and turned into acoustic rock songs and still be functional and successful. It is those characteristics that make this record interesting to listen to, besides being eminently danceable.  LA is getting a shot to check these guys out live this week as they play a set on the 18th at ELXR Night Club in Hollywood as a special FREE Holiday party for the 21+ crowd (details here). The Tale of Abigale Withers is available now on iTunes.

The ancillary appeal of this project is the incredible artwork. While I admit being a total geek about great album art (Blackpool Lights - This Town’s Disaster for example) I know I’m not the only one. It is a grossly underappreciated art form in this age of downloading where nobody gets to see the full size vinyl covers anymore. The artist responsible is Christopher Lee whose website is called The Beast is Back. In addition to the artwork for the album which can be seen on the I Am Medic site, Christopher Lee designed a mascot of sorts for the band which can be seen here. Christopher also has a shop connected to his site where you can purchase extremely reasonably priced prints of his work, some as low as $10. Be sure to check out my favorites, the Zombicorn and the Sniffing Wardoodle.

Upcoming gig:  12/18 at ELXR Night Club, 5750 Hollywood Bl., Hollywood

Lionize Tour 2011

Reggae Rockers LIONIZE
Winners of High Times’ ‘Doobie Award’ for Best Reggae/Soul Record of 2010
To Release New Album February 2011
On Hardline Entertainment

Destruction Manual Produced by J. Robbins (Jawbox)
& Featuring Guest Appearances By David Hinds & Selwyn Brown Of Steel Pulse
& Tim Sult of Clutch

Band To Tour With Authority Zero and Flatfoot 56 In January

 With Streetlight Manifesto in February

Maryland-based reggae/rock band LIONIZE, winners of the 2010 High Times Magazine ‘Doobie Award’ for Best Reggae/Soul Record for ‘SPACE POPE AND THE GLASS MACHINE (for which they beat out such nominees as Matisyahu, Easystar Allstars and Tarrus Riley) are gearing up for the release of their new album DESTRUCTION MANUAL in early Feb. 2011 on Hardline Entertainment.

Gaining fans across the world, LIONIZE takes pride in their original sound, DIY work ethic and fiery live shows. DESTRUCTION MANUAL, (produced by J. Robbins of Jawbox) finds the band continuing its exploration of the stoner-rock, funk and reggae landscapes.

This twelve-song LP calls to mind classic reggae and rock albums with a decidedly modern spin. The band's foundation on drums and bass are LaMel Randolgh and Henry Upton who hint at a rock-and-roll version of Sly and Robbie joined with the classic scorching Hammond organ and key sounds from Chris Brooks and the commanding guitar and vocal work of Nathan Bergman.

Reggae heavyweights David Hinds and Selwyn Brown of Steel Pulse lend their vocal talents on the track ‘Killers and Crooks’ as well as stalwart guitar work from Tim Sult of Clutch who also lends his talents throughout this record. Lionize continues to tour over 200 dates a year, having been tapped to open up for bands such as Clutch, Galactic, Steel Pulse and Bad Brains. LIONIZE also pulled double duty backing and supporting Lee "Scratch" Perry, garnering a slew of positive reviews.

Between recording in Kingston, Jamaica with Sidney Mills (Steel Pulse), collaborating on and off stage with artists such as Ozomatli and Chali 2na, and supporting heavy metal favorites Kylesa and cKy, the band begins 2011 on quite an auspicious note.

Despite its lack of mainstream press, the band's loyal following expands daily. With DESTRUCTION MANUAL set to be released in early 2011, and tours supporting Authority Zero
and Streetlight Manifesto on the horizon, LIONIZE continues to turn ears as a novel addition to the sonic terrain of rock and roll with its train of heavy riffs, wailing organ, and pulsating reggae.

The Almost Lost Art of Album Covers: Chris Bourke

These days it seems more and more musicians are investing less and less thought into their album artwork. After all, so much of music has become digital downloads, and often people only ever see the artwork of the album in a tiny square on their iTunes. This is a tragic loss for the music community, but one that is not being given up without a fight by a handful of musicians who have taken the time and interest to utilize the talents of terrific artists around the world. One such artist, Chris Bourke, has done beautiful work for Frank Turner, who in turn took the time and effort to help promote the artwork rather than allowing it to go by unnoticed. On the Chris Bourke website you can purchase gorgeous limited edition prints including ones of Frank Turner's Poetry of the Deed album cover. It's time to start investing in art with meaning and heart and relevance to the music community, not just buying random prints at IKEA to hang on your walls. Chris Bourke would be a great place to start.

Lovedrug: Love is the Drug

Lovedrug is a tremendous indie band that has been around forever (since 2001 to be exact). They were with The Militia Group for awhile but are currently navigating the tremulous waters of the music industry on their own. That is where you come in. They currently have a project up with Pledge Music which is functionally similar to Kickstarter (another company that's done great work with indie bands). It's very simple. You go to IAMLOVEDRUG.COM and read about their project and make a monetary pledge. You get varying levels of rewards from the band, based on how much you pledge. Meanwhile the band gets the funding they need to complete the project. It's a win - win.

More Biffy Clyro News!!! Sonisphere

Mention Biffy Clyro to ten Americans, and it's quite likely you will get a lot of blank stares. They are not huge here, yet, and that's ok cause it means we still get one more shot to see them in small club venues as they swing through America starting in February. But lest you doubt my adamance that they are headed for huge, it has just been announced that they will be headlining the Saturday show of Sonisphere Knebworth in July 2011.To give you the idea of the magnitude of this announcement, estimates of attendance for this festival next year are running at 60,000 people. They will be one of the two headliners (the other being Slipknot). The two headliners in 2009 were Linkin Park and Metallica and 2010 saw Rammstein and Iron Maiden headline the show. In other words....THIS IS HUGE! America is bound to catch up soon and realize this is an amazing band, with gorgeous songwriting and a mesmerizing live show, but in the mean time, hats off to the Brits who've already gotten that memo.

By the by, to our Aussie friends, if you are headed to any of the Muse shows this week be sure to get there early to see Biffy Clyro open.

Social Distortion vs. + 44

One side effect to listening to vast amounts of music each year, both on the radio and on disc, is that you start to hear certain similarities between songs. Sometimes these similarities are completely random coincidences. Other times a little poking will reveal a reason behind the similarity (like when The Academy Is released Santi and it sounded like a long lost Marvelous 3 record - sharing Butch Walker as the common thread). Well at the risk of engendering the wrath of Mike Ness (who no doubt could kick my ass should he choose to do so), I have found another, at this point unexplained, similarity between the recently released to radio "Machine Gun Blues" by Social Distortion and the +44 song "When Your Heart Stops Beating". It's just the guitar piece at the beginning of both songs that seems so similar, but every time "Machine Gun Blues" comes on the radio I think of +44. I have linked to both Myspace pages which have each respective song posted. Follow the links, play them back to back, and decide for yourself.

The Daylights: Video Love Letter

You may or may not have seen this video that has been circulating since yesterday. The story goes that this guy recruited his roommates who happen to be a band (The Daylights) to create this song and video as a love letter to his long distance girlfriend. I'm not sure I really care whether it's true or not (although I have reached out to the band for comment and am awaiting a reply), but in either case it's a cool video and good song. So props to The Daylights either way. The song is available on iTunes.
